Despite having to audition for a second time, Roberts was once again able to secure the role, despite rumors of Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer taking over.

“To be honest, I didn’t know if I was doing this movie yet. She’s across the desk, we’re getting to know each other, we’re flirty-flirty, nice-nice,” Gere said at the Today show.

“And [Marshall] calls up and it’s kind of like, ‘How’s it going?’ And I’m going, ‘Yeah, yeah,’ and she takes a piece of paper. She turns it around, and she pushes it to me. It said, ‘Please say yes.’ It was so sweet. And I was like [miming talking on the phone], ‘I just said yes.'”

In Julia Roberts’ opinion, Pretty Woman takes a dark turn years later. She told EW back in 2023 that Richard Gere’s Pretty Woman character is now dead.

“I think he passed away peacefully in his sleep from a heart attack, smiling,” Roberts told Gayle King. “And now she runs his business.”

Roberts was kinder when assessing Maggie in Runaway Bride. “They stay together. He doesn’t die in this one,” she joked. “They’re gonna stay together.”
