Julia Roberts And Richard Gere Shared A KIss At The Pretty Woman Reunion

Posted to YouTube almost a decade ago, the Today segment featuring the cast of Pretty Woman together after 25 years turned into one of the most-watched clips on their YouTube channel, with over 21 million views. Actors Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Laura San Giacomo and Hector Elizondo and director Garry Marshall sat alongside Matt Lauer, who wasn’t canceled just yet at that point, to discuss the film.

However, there was a certain moment that caught the attention of fans, and it happened at the start. While the castmates greet one another, Richard Gere and Julia Roberts share a kiss on the lips. Julia Roberts, Mother's Day

Julia Roberts lost her mind when an interviewer revealed to her that her last name is not really Roberts.

What else were fans saying? Here are some of the other most-liked comments from the viral reunion.

“Let’s be real, this film would have been nothing without Julia and Richard’s chemistry. He just looks like he adores her every time he lays eyes on her.”

“The way they still sit close to each other and flirt is so genuine. So good to see respect between them. They still have that chemistry. Hector and Laura haven’t aged, they look great.”

All those years later, the two still shared that great chemistry. However, Roberts revealed that it took some convincing to get Gere onboard.

Julia Roberts Convinced Richard Gere To Take The Pretty Woman Role

At the start, Pretty Woman wasn’t looking promising as the film folded. Roberts was out of a job, but the script was eventually given new life with director Garry Marshall. Despite having to audition for a second time, Roberts was once again able to secure the role, despite rumors of Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer taking over.

Gere still wasn’t sure about making the film, but completely changed his mind after meeting Roberts. Julia Roberts convinced Gere to take on the role in a cute way.

“To be honest, I didn’t know if I was doing this movie yet. She’s across the desk, we’re getting to know each other, we’re flirty-flirty, nice-nice,” Gere said at the Today show.

“And [Marshall] calls up and it’s kind of like, ‘How’s it going?’ And I’m going, ‘Yeah, yeah,’ and she takes a piece of paper. She turns it around, and she pushes it to me. It said, ‘Please say yes.’ It was so sweet. And I was like [miming talking on the phone], ‘I just said yes.'”

The rest is history…

Julia Roberts Thinks Richard Gere’s Character In Pretty Women Died

In Julia Roberts’ opinion, Pretty Woman takes a dark turn years later. She told EW back in 2023 that Richard Gere’s Pretty Woman character is now dead.

“I think he passed away peacefully in his sleep from a heart attack, smiling,” Roberts told Gayle King. “And now she runs his business.”

Roberts was kinder when assessing Maggie in Runaway Bride. “They stay together. He doesn’t die in this one,” she joked. “They’re gonna stay together.”

Perhaps the best of all the characters is what happened to Anna from Notting Hill with William. “She’s retired. She has six children and has maintained her waist size, amazingly,” she said. “He runs the bookshop still. And now there’s a little knitting annex to the bookshop that she runs.”

Truly surreal to look at all the iconic characters Julia Roberts has played over the years.
