“I was like, ‘Am I about to be the unnamed guy that dies with Tom in a smoking hole in the middle of London?’ ” Glen Powell joked.

Glen Powell might not be getting on a helicopter with Tom Cruise again anytime soon.
In an interview for British GQ Hype, the 35-year-old Hit Man actor revealed that Cruise, 61, once pretended to lose control of a helicopter while piloting it, with Powell as his passenger.
According to the outlet, the prank occurred when the two were flying back to London after filming reshoots for Top Gun: Maverick at Pinewood Studios, about 18 miles outside of the English capital city.
“Tom goes, ‘Oh no, oh no,’ and he starts dropping the helicopter over London,” Powell recalled of Cruise’s joke stunt. “I was like, ‘Am I about to be the unnamed guy that dies with Tom in a smoking hole in the middle of London?’ ”

Powell also talked about having a pilot’s license of his own in the GQ interview, joking, “I thought I could be Tom Cruise.”
“He has a helicopter and he’s flying actual jets. If I have to pop over to New York or Texas, in this SR-22, it’ll take me forever,” added the Scream Queens alum.
Powell played Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin in 2022’s Maverick, a long-awaited sequel to Cruise’s 1986 blockbuster hit Top Gun. The more recent film saw Cruise reprise his role as Navy officer Pete “Maverick” Mitchell more than three decades after the first movie’s release.
Maverick follows Cruise’s title character as he trains a new generation of pilots, including Powell’s character and Miles Teller’s Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, for a top-secret dangerous mission.
Powell previously revealed that Cruise persuaded him to sign on to Maverick after he initially auditioned for Teller’s role but didn’t get it and wasn’t initially interested after that.
“[Tom and I] sat down for a couple hours and talked about his life and his career and how he chooses movies, and how he develops roles and those sort of things,” the Anyone But You star told PEOPLE in April 2022.
“It was really a series of those conversations that convinced me that this could be a role that could actually be exciting, that I could have a little bit of creative license. I could make it my own and make something that could be really special.”
“And I have to give Tom credit, a lot of times people just try to get you on the hook to get you in a movie and none of the promises are fulfilled,” he continued. “But he fulfilled every single one of those promises. And I’m really proud of the movie and I’m proud of my role in it.”
