He’s the entire planet’s wholesome and heartwarming ‘boyfriend,’ but Keanu Reeves has a singular bad habit: he smokes.
While everything else about Keanu is adorable and ‘aww’-inducing — like the fact that he’s hands-off when posing with female fans — he is a smoker and has had a hard time kicking the habit.
In fact, Keanu admitted in an interview that it’s one thing that holds him back in life.
As Keanu explained in a long-ago interview, he picked up smoking when he was filming ‘Feeling Minnesota.’ For anyone who doesn’t remember or maybe wasn’t alive then, ‘Feeling Minnesota’ came out in 1996, and Reeves starred with Cameron Diaz in the movie.
The film didn’t receive great reviews, and it also catapulted Keanu into a bad habit he’s apparently never been able to shake. His character in the movie smoked, and after all those scenes with a cigarette in hand (and of course, in his mouth), Keanu said he was addicted.
As he told Daily Mail in 2008, he “got hooked” during that old film, and “now it’s a prison.” At the time, Reeves explained that he wanted to stop, but that it was really challenging to do so.
Fans who smoke — or used to — can totally relate. At the same time, someone as seemingly health-conscious as Keanu seems like an oxymoron. While reviews of his work are sometimes mixed, no one can deny that Keanu often transforms himself for his artistry.
He’s lost weight, gained weight, bulked up, and shaven his entire body for a gig before. So why is it so hard to stop smoking?
Well, he likely has few vices in life, so smoking may fill a void. And as Daily Mail quoted, Keanu’s hobbies include traveling, having a healthy relationship, and drinking some wine. So maybe he’s achieving those things without quitting smoking, so he feels content with his life overall.
Then again, he probably wouldn’t quite be the Keanu fans know and love without his bad habit. Still, some are concerned about his health, and not just his happiness post-sad sandwich meme.
The biggest irony is that Keanu is all about charity work and philanthropy, and a lot of his volunteering and donations go to a private cancer foundation. He also helps out children’s cancer charities.
But fans wish that Keanu would invest some of his wealth and his effort into his own health. Stopping smoking should be a bigger goal for the actor, especially if he wants to keep helping others stay healthy!
