Things got off to quite a start for Carrie Underwood in her first episode as an American Idol judge! The Season 4 winner made her official debut next to Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie during the Season 23 premiere on Sunday, March 9.

Of course, Underwood had plenty of sound advice to give the artists, but there was one contestant who almost had her at a loss for words.

Crews Wright, a 17-year-old aspiring country singer, came to his audition with an outgoing personality that immediately won the judges over. “I love you,” Underwood told him before he even started singing. Crews then got a little flirty, telling the superstar, “I can be single.”

It was at that point, though, that Underwood had to shut it down. “Oh, well, I cannot!” she insisted, holding up her left hand to reveal her wedding ring. The “Before He Cheats” singer has been married to Mike Fisher, whom she shares two children with, since 2010.

“I guess I just blew that one,” Crews sighed, to which Underwood replied, “I’m old enough to be your mama!” However, she was still the victim of some teasing from Bryan, who asked, “Are you blushing?!” Underwood said she wasn’t, but she sheepishly shied away from her colleague.

Crews went on to sing “Fireman” by George Strait, and even had Underwood singing along throughout his performance. The audition impressed the judges, and Richie urged Bryan to step up and duet with Crews on the chorus one more time. “We’re going to turn this into a honky tonk!” the “Country Girl” singer declared.

In the end, it was a unanimous “yes” from all three. “I don’t even think we need to waste time,” Richie said. “We need to just go right to the vote.”

After Crews left the room to celebrate with his family, Bryan added, “He’s got a good little voice,” and Underwood said, “He does have a good voice! And a good performer.” Crews’ journey will continue during Hollywood week once auditions are complete.
