If there’s one role that people associate with Johnny Depp, it’s Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise. In five movies released between 2003 and 2017, the actor played the famous pirate who is a highly entertaining character. Depp was paid over $650 million for the franchise, starting with $10 million for the first movie. While Depp has appeared in Tim Burton films and several horror movies, fans will never forget his time as Sparrow.

Sometimes an actor will make an incredible amount of money for one role… but they won’t enjoy the experience at all. Did Johnny Depp hate being in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise?

How Does Johnny Depp Feel About The Pirates Of The Caribbean Franchise Today?

While Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 is in the works, Johnny Depp was told that he couldn’t come back to play Jack Sparrow. There were rumors that Depp would be paid $300 million and would be allowed to play the role again after the court case was finished. But that didn’t end up happening.

Depp has had a lot to say on the topic. According to Entertainment Weekly, when Depp was in court for his legal battle against Amber Heard, he was asked if he would even want to be in the sixth movie. He said no, he wouldn’t.

The actor explained that he would have been happy to continue acting in the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies for a long time to come.

Depp said, “My feeling was that these characters should be able to have their proper goodbye. A franchise could only last for so long, and there’s a way to end a franchise like that. And I thought that the characters deserved to have their way out of… to end the franchise on a very good note. And I planned on continuing until it was time to stop.”

Considering these comments, it seems that Johnny Depp feels good about his time starring in the Disney franchise. He was candid during his court dates. If he really disliked being in the franchise, it seems that he would have admitted that.

According to E! News, Make-A-Wish contacted Depp in 2022 about a young boy named Kori who was in the hospital after having a total of two heart transplants. Depp put on the Jack Sparrow costume and recorded a message for the kid. He said, “Captain Kori, terribly sorry I missed out on this. Meant to say it, forgot to say it, didn’t say it, gonna say it now. Saying it, I’ll say it. I hear tales of something they speak about in the ages of now called the YouTube channel, which I don’t understand, but why not?”

Depp also said “I am your No. 1 fan, Captain Kori” before the video concluded.

If Depp really hated his famous character, it seems like he wouldn’t have wanted to do this. He seemed to give the message his all as he wanted to do something kind for this young child who had been through so much.

In an interview with Heavy Mag, Depp discussed the creative process behind his Pirates Of The Caribbean role. It sounds like he was given the chance to really dive into the character and play Sparrow the way that he wanted to.

Depp said that he was grateful to Jerry Bruckheimer, a producer on the franchise. He explained to Heavy Mag, “Jerry is an amazing support for every part of the team. He has had the same crews working for him for twenty-odd years… it is crazy.”

Depp continued, “He’s a producer that produces. The whole team have always been there in a creative way since the beginning, and I have come to love them. They have let me do some very strange stuff, and they just laugh really. An actor’s responsibility is to give a director options, and I gave them some options.”

Johnny Depp has played several great characters over the course of his career. These include Glen Lantz in A Nightmare On Elm Street, Edward Scissorhands in the 1990 Tim Burton movie, and Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow, to name a few. But no character has had quite as much staying power in pop culture as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise.

The actor shared that he was inspired by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones when working on Jack. He also said that he went through some method acting in order to really get into character.

According to Ladbible.com, Depp said, “I was just looking at various aspects of the character and I figured this is a guy who’s been on the high seas the majority of his life. I figured he’d probably dealt with a lot of inescapable heat to the brain, so I cranked a sauna up to about 1,000 degrees and I sat in there for as long as I could until it started to affect me mentally.”

While it remains to be seen if Johnny Depp will play Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise again, it does seem that he loved this character.
