Kate Winslet rocked the world and fans of crime and drama in 2021 with her Emmy-winning series, Mare of Easttown. Starring Winslet as a detective uncovering a murder in a small town just outside of Philadelphia, the series also starred the Hollywood legend Jean Smart as Winslet’s on-screen mother.

A memorable series that received acclaim for its story, characters, acting, and more, fans of the show have been waiting to see more of the tale and the characters to return. While supposed plans of trying to bring it back have been in the works, nothing really has happened. And Smart reckons it might not come back at all.

Jean Smart has played several incredible roles in various movies, series, and more. A six-time Emmy award winner and more, the actress received wide-spread acclaim for her role as Kate Winslet‘s on-screen mother in HBO’s miniseries, Mare of Easttown.
Starring the Titanic star as detective Marianne ‘Mare’ Sheehan, the series premise proved to be shockingly popular among fans, many of whom are hoping to see more of Mare in action. Despite talks of the series’ possible return and a second season, nothing much has taken place.

And now Smart reckons that Mare of Easttown might be dead for good. While talking to Glamour for the Icon Only feature, the actress was asked which of her roles would she love to revisit and she stated candidly,
Mare of Easttown and Watchmen. I loved playing those characters. They were so different and fun. And I know they’ve been trying to figure out a way to do some more Mare of Easttown, but it’s gotten too complicated, so it probably won’t happen.
The seven-episode miniseries received 16 nominations at the 2021 Emmy Awards along with ample praise and positive reviews after its release. Although a second season was not in plan, Winslet had remarked back then to Entertainment Weekly that the writer Brad Ingelsby had some good ideas for a second season. But as we know nothing has happened since then.

Mare of Easttown is now widely hailed as one of the best crime drama miniseries of all time. Having an impeccable 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it still continues to be missed despite it being years since its premiere.
The way it continues to be talked about proves just how wonderful of an experience it was and fans would do pretty much anything to see Mare return to the screen once again. Despite Kate Winslet teasing its return back in 2021 to Entertainment Weekly, nothing definitive has happened till now.
Just in June this year, HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi spoke with Variety that while it is too soon to bring back Mare, there were nonetheless discussions happening about building something. With no second season in the works, we can only keep our fingers crossed that the makers get another enticing case for Mare to solve leading to a potential awe-inspiring season 2.
