Foster appeared to ask someone, “What did she say?” as Chastain referenced the 30-year anniversary of Foster’s SAG Awards victory for “Nell.”
Jessica Chastain seemingly caught Jodie Foster off guard at the 2024 SAG Awards.
As Chastain took the stage Saturday night to present the SAG statuette for Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture, the Eyes of Tammy Faye star honored Foster’s achievement as the category’s first-ever recipient — only Foster seemed to miss everything Chastain said.
“At the very first SAG Awards, the award for Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture went to the incredible Jodie Foster,” Chastain said, referencing Foster’s performance in Nell, which earned the category’s first iteration in 1995.

Chastain then looked toward Foster as the camera cut to the True Detective: Night Country star, who appeared to ask the person sitting next to her, “What? What did she say?” while pointing toward Chastain, who continued with her introduction.
“I was honored to win this award two years ago, and tonight, on this 30th anniversary, I’m thrilled to welcome the next member to the club,” Chastain continued. “By the way, the club meets the last Wednesday of each month for a different activity. Laser tag, escape room, ax throwing. See you Wednesday, Jodie!”
Following the bit, Chastain presented the award to Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone, who pulled off a surprising upset over heavily predicted winner Emma Stone.
