Jodie Foster, the two-time Academy Award-winning actress known for her performances in The Silence of the Lambs, Taxi Driver and more, has primarily kept her personal life out of the spotlight.

The mother of two shares sons Charlie and Kit with ex Cydney Bernard, and she has been married to photographer Alexandra Hedison since 2014.

The Emmy Award winner met film producer Cydney on the set of the 1993 film Sommersby. The pair kept their relationship fairly private at the time, but Jodie gave a subtle shout out to Cydney in a speech during the 2007 The Hollywood Reporter‘s Women in Entertainment event by thanking her “beautiful Cydney who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss.”

Jodie and Cydney share two children. The True Detective: Night Country actress welcomed son Charles Bernard in 1998. Three years later, she gave birth to son Christopher “Kit” Bernard.

The couple reportedly split in 2008, and in 2013, when Jodie accepted the Cecil B. Demille Award at the Golden Globes, she addressed her personal life by formally coming out.

After being introduced by Robert Downey Jr., Jodie said, “While I’m here being all confessional, I just have the sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public. A declaration that I’m a little nervous about, but maybe not quite as nervous as my publicist, huh, Jennifer? But uh, you know, I’m just going to put it out there. Loud and proud. On a more serious note, she added, “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago, back in the Stone Age. In those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family, coworkers and then gradually, proudly, to everyone who knew her.”

Addressing Cydney at the 2013 Golden Globes, Jodie said, according to People, “I am so proud of our modern family. Our amazing sons, Charlie and Kit, who are my reason to breathe and to evolve.”
