John Wick: Chapter 5 filming start rumors have reportedly been debunked. Released in 2023, John Wick: Chapter 4 ended in explosive and ambiguous fashion as Keanu Reeves’ titular assassin seemingly succumbed to his wounds after a duel with Donnie Yen’s Caine. Shortly after the fourth film was released and became a box office success. John Wick: Chapter 5 was announced by Lionsgate despite Chapter 4‘s ending, though what form it will take, and whether Reeves will be involved, remains unclear.
However, according to Collider, John Wick: Chapter 5 will not start filming next year, reportedly debunking earlier rumors suggesting that production would begin sometime in 2025. Collider‘s sources confirm that while a fifth film is still possible, it won’t start filming next year. If the project does move forward, Chad Stahelski will be the director, and no one else.
The John Wick Franchise Future Explained
Spinoffs Are On The Way
While he will reportedly direct John Wick: Chapter 5 if it happens, Stahelski’s full focus is currently on the Highlander reboot, which he is writing, directing, and producing. The project is set to start shooting in Scotland early next year with Henry Cavill starring in the lead role. This would have conflicted with the John Wick: Chapter 5 rumors that filming would start sometime in 2025, which have now reportedly been debunked.
Stahelski, who directed the first four John Wick movies to much success, was recently assigned to a special role at Lionsgate to manage both the John Wick and Highlander franchises, due to his exceptional work with the studio. The John Wick franchise is due to expand with the upcoming release of Ballerina, featuring Ana de Armas in the lead role alongside the return of Ian McShane as Winston Scott, the late Lance Reddick, and Reeves. However, this is the only planned addition to the Wick universe on the film front.
A new television series is also currently being developed, and it appears to be intended as a follow-up to the events of John Wick: Chapter 4. That project should become a priority for Stahelski after he finishes filming the Highlander reboot. Although the John Wick franchise holds significant importance for Stahelski, and he intends to approach it with great care in the future, his immediate focus is on the Highlander reboot instead of John Wick: Chapter 5.
