Over the past few years, Johnny Depp has been involved in several high-profile lawsuits, most notably his battle with former wife Amber Heard. These legal issues led to his career opportunities significantly dwindling, and he’s only starred in a small handful of projects ever since. Now, however, he’s set to feature in Terry Gilliam’s new movie, The Carnival at the End of Days.

Gilliam and Depp first worked together in 1998 on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, with the actor playing Raoul Duke, a fictionalised version of Hunter S. Thompson. They reunited again for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus in 2009, playing one variation of a character also played by Heath Ledger, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law in the movie.

The Carnival at the End of Days will be Gilliam’s first film since 2018’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. The director, who gained recognition as a member of Monty Python, has helmed movies such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Brazil, 12 Monkeys, and Time Bandits.

Talking to Premiere, Gilliam teased some exclusive news about his upcoming movie, which will star Jason Momoa, Jeff Bridges and Adam Driver alongside Depp. He shared that Depp will play Satan, while Bridges is set to portray his opposite, God.

The filmmaker called the movie a “comedy where God decides to destroy Humanity. And the only one trying to save us is Satan. Because he needs people in hell, otherwise he won’t have a job for eternity.”

Gilliam also teased the tone of the film, explaining, “It will be very funny for those who like to be offended.” He seems to have a slightly unusual take on the character of God in mind, revealing, “He will not be the God we are used to.”

The director added, “In the film, God is nature, but a nature that can talk to you. I’m going to need animation to bring it to life, because in the scene with God, there are at least fifteen animals. It’s going to be complicated because it has to be realistic. And it’s going to be very expensive!”

The film won’t be ready for quite some time, with shooting “scheduled for next January.” Still, Gilliam has reassured fans that he has a “pretty good cast” and seems excited to get the ball rolling on his new project.
