Once someone starts to become famous these days, one of the first things they tend to do is get their teeth fixed. A recent example of that phenomenon is the fact that the comedian Matt Rife spent a lot of money to get the perfect teeth he has now. Amazingly enough, however, stars like Taylor Swift sometimes still have fans worried about their smile after they get new teeth.

Unlike people like Swift and Rife, Johnny Depp not only opted not to get new teeth, many fans think he has let his chompers rot. As it turns out, the reason Depp has kept his teeth is that he takes pride in their imperfections.

When Johnny Depp became a TV star, it didn’t take long for many viewers to become completely smitten with him. As time went on and Depp became a massive movie star, the actor went on to become one of the biggest sex symbols of his generation.

Since then, the perception of Depp’s status as a hunk certainly has changed a lot. As for why Depp isn’t considered a heartthrob any longer, there are many reasons why the actor isn’t perceived the way he once was.

Obviously, the accusations leveled at Depp by Amber Heard had a huge effect on how the actor is viewed. Depp’s love for playing less attractive characters like Jack Sparrow, Ed Wood, and Raoul Duke chipped away at his hunk status.

On top of all that, there is something that fans noticed about Depp that changed the actor’s image.

In May 2023, Page Six published an article looking at how people were reacting to Depp’s teeth on social media. To say that many of the social media posts about Depp’s teeth from that time were very harsh is a pretty big understatement.

In some cases, the posts about Depp’s teeth were very straightforward. “Johnny Depp’s teeth are literally ROTTING.” In other cases, users who were writing about Depp’s teeth got a lot more creative as they also mocked a movie the actor starred in.

“Johnny Depp’s new movie, #JeanneDuBarry, debuts with a Metacritic score of 51, an F rating. The score is currently as yellow as his teeth. Congratulations! 💛”

Yet another user chimed in on the discussion about Depp’s teeth to describe what his chompers look like. “johnny depp just looks like someone grabbed his teeth and painted them black.” There also was a pair of users who complained that photos of Depp’s teeth were spreading on social media.

“why do i have to see closeup pics of johnny depp’s teeth against my will.” Another user agreed with that sentiment. “Seeing that pic of Johnny Depp’s teeth on my tl just ruined my mood. That’s enough Twitter for me.”

Also in May 2023, another person used social media to bring up how Depp’s breath must smell based on how his teeth look. “Johnny depp’s teeth are absolutely disgusting, it’s gotta smell so bad in there ew”

Why Johnny Depp Was Proud Of His Teeth

By the time most celebrities show up at red carpet-events, they have had an entire team of people help them. Between hair stylists, makeup artists, and wardrobe professionals, stars show up to red-carpet events after hours of being processed.

After all that work is put in by a slew of people, including the star who has been fawned over for hours, sometimes it backfires. When celebrities wind up on worst-dressed lists, it must be infuriating and heartbreaking after everything they went through.

In May 2023, all the effort people put in to make Johnny Depp look good at the 76th Cannes Film Festival went to waste. The reason for that is when Depp attended the premiere of Jeanne du Barry at that event, everyone focused on his teeth.

In photos of Depp smiling at that premiere, it was clear the actor’s teeth hadn’t been fixed. While the discussion about Depp’s teeth went viral in May 2023, that was far from the first time the actor’s chompers have been discussed.

Since Depp has made a fortune during his career, he easily could have gotten his teeth fixed many years before the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. With that in mind, it begs an obvious question. Why has Depp chosen not to get a dental overhaul?

Given the scandal that has surrounded Depp, it makes sense that he hasn’t spoken about his teeth for years now. However, in the year 1995, the subject of Depp’s teeth came up when the actor was interviewed by Premiere Magazine.

At that time, Depp explained to Premiere Magazine’s interviewer that he was proud to have rotting teeth.

“I’ve got loads of cavities. I had a root canal done eight years ago that’s unfinished. It’s like a rotten little stub. But I like it. It’s like when the Indians would make something beaded, they would always put imperfections on it.”

Going even further, Depp went on to explain that he can’t stand it when he sees people with perfect teeth. “I’m proud of these. When I see people with perfect teeth, it drives me up the wall. I’d rather swallow a tick than have that!”

In the years since Depp’s Premiere Magazine interview, his teeth have gotten a lot worse. As a result, it certainly is possible that the pride Depp once felt about his teeth has diminished over time.

That said, it certainly seems like Depp has continued to take pride in the state of his teeth. After all, Depp clearly could have gotten some major work done if that wasn’t the case, and it may not have cost him a thing.

How much would a dentist love to be able to boast they were the one who fixed Depp’s teeth? It is even possible that some dentists would pay Depp to be able to promote that he has a pearly white smile they gave him.
