Kate Winslet dropped a little secret from the set of James Cameron’s Titanic, which gave us a preview into what went into shooting one of the most famous scenes from the film.

For Vanity Fair, Winslet revisited some of her most iconic roles, and it’s no surprise that, along the way, she stopped to discuss what it was like playing Rose opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

The scene in question was the famous “I’m flying” scene, where Rose spreads her arms wide as Jack keeps her held safely in his grip.

“This was a nightmare,” Winslet said. “Leo couldn’t stop laughing, and we had to re-shoot this about four times”.

Winslet explained that James Cameron was chasing a specific light for the scene and “the sunsets kept changing”.

But perhaps the most interesting thing revealed by Winslet was that the part of the ship we see in the scene “wasn’t part of the actual whole ship set that [they] had. It was a sawn off bit.”

“We had to climb up a ladder to get to it,” she said. “Hair and make up couldn’t get to us.”

This led to Winslet haven’t to get crafty. “I have got hidden [in my costume] his make up and brushes and sponge and my make up and brushes and sponge,” she said. “Inbetween takes I was basically redoing our makeup”.

So not only did Winslet deliver an Oscar nominated performance in Titanic, but she had a four-take stint touching up the stunning make up design that scored Tina Earnshaw, Greg Cannom and Simon Thompson their own nomination.
