Kate Winslet is reflecting on her early days in the business — and the “horrific” body-shaming she endured.
During an interview with 60 Minutes on Sunday, the 49-year-old thought back on some of the heinous commentary she was subjected to during her rise to fame in Hollywood. Because believe it or not, not even the absolutely drop-dead gorgeous actress was immune to hate. In one resurfaced clip aired during her interview, Kate and Leonardo DiCaprio walk arm-in-arm on the Titanic red carpet — and a commentator disgustingly says it looks like she was “melted and poured” into her dress. They add:
“She just needed two sizes larger and it would have probably been okay.”
How awful! People are SO cruel — even worse back then! Not to mention Kate looked ABSOLUTELY stunning, so it’s ridiculous to boot!
Reflecting on the nasty body-shaming, Kate said in the interview:
“It’s absolutely appalling. What kind of a person must they be to do something like that? To a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out.”
Seriously!
The Avatar: The Way of Water star was asked if she ever got face-to-face with any of the critics, and if so, how she handled it. And she didn’t hold back:
“I did get face-to-face — I let them have it. I said that I hope this haunts you.”
Welling up with tears, the mom of two recalled:
“It was a great moment. It was a great moment because it wasn’t just for me. It was for all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment. It was horrific. It was really bad.”
Ugh, we just want to give her a hug. Good for her for taking the opportunity to scold whoever that jerk was! But sadly, even more than 25 years later, she’s STILL dealing with the same mistreatment. Over the summer, Kate revealed that while filming Lee, a crew member advised her to “sit up straight” during a bikini scene to hide her “belly rolls.” But she didn’t budge. She said at the time:
“I take pride in it because it is my life on my face, and that matters. It wouldn’t occur to me to cover that up.”
Elsewhere in her 60 Minutes interview, Kate reflected on being body-shamed by a drama teacher telling her she’d have to “settle for the fat girl parts.”
Poor Kate. You can hear her talk more about body-shaming (below):
