Katy Perry will be honored by MTV with this year’s VMAs Video Vanguard Award, the network announced Thursday, with the singer also set for a performance slot on the Sept. 11 Video Music Awards telecast.

She’s set to perform some of her greatest hits – with her new single, “Lifetimes,” which came out last week, likely to be part of any medley. Her high-profile appearance will come nine days before Perry releases her new album, “143,” on Sept. 20.

Perry’s appearance will mark her first time on the show since 2017, when she collaborated with Nicki Minaj for that telecast’s finale.

“Katy is a musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon,” said Bruce Gillmer, the president of music, music talent, programming and events for Paramount and chief content officer, music, for Paramount+. “With her game-changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages. Katy’s prowess will be on full display live on the VMAs with a can’t-miss, career-encompassing performance celebrating her biggest moments and chart-topping hits.”

Shakira received the award last year. Previous Video Vanguard Award recipients include Beyoncé, Minaj, Madonna, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Missy Elliott and Michael Jackson, for whom it was named for a number of years.

The network announced earlier this week that the 2024 MTV VMAs were being pushed back by one day, with the understanding that it was to avoid a conflict with the presidential debate that was recently confirmed for Sept. 10.

Besides Perry, the artists who’ve been announced as performing on the show so far this year are Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro.

Taylor Swift leads this year’s nominees with 10, followed by Post Malone with nine; Ariana Grande, Eminem and Carpenter with six; Megan Thee Stallion and SZA with five; and Olivia Rodrigo, Lisa and Teddy Swims with four each.

The show will air from New York’s UBS Arena at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
