Despite the last film in the franchise performing poorly, Reeves is open to return to the franchise.

Keanu Reeves owes a lot to The Matrix, a film series that is one of the few Hollywood classics that are still referenced in world media. While the latest addition to the film franchise was not very well received, Reeves has made his intentions clear about coming back for a fifth film, and there is just one condition the Youngblood-alum has when it comes to his return to the franchise.

Keanu Reeves is integral to The Matrix franchise, and while a fifth film has been announced, with  Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay for The Martian, who is set to direct, no cast for the film has been announced yet. Reeves, however, has made it clear that if the film franchise wishes him to return for a third film, there is one person who needs to be part of the creative process for the franchise.

Keanu Reeves wants Lana Wachowski to return to the franchise

The Matrix || Warner Bros.
Lana Wachowski is one-half of The Wachowskis, whose brainchild was the Matrix franchise, which was instrumental in boosting Keanu Reeves‘ career. While the original three Matrix movies had the sisters signing off on the final product, the sequel was worked on by Lana Wachowski alone, who wrote and directed the project.

Reeves has made it clear that he would like Lana to be involved in the fifth installment of the franchise, and would enter the project himself only if this was viable. Given that the Wachowiskis are not only instrumental to the Matrix franchise but also its progenitors, Reeves might feel more comfortable if the IP remained in the hands of its original creators, despite the $159 million loss (according to The Numbers) the most recent installment of the film incurred.

The Martian scribe seemingly approached Warner Bros. with a bold new direction to take the Matrix universe in, something that Jesse Ehrman is very excited and confident about. In a statement, Ehrman said:

Drew (Goddard) came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,

While Goddard’s Matrix is far from even entering pre-production, the film will have some big shoes to fill for the franchise and have some damage control to do, given how badly the last film in the franchise has underperformed. However, given the track record that Goddard has had, the franchise seems in good hands.
