On Saturday, Sept. 7, it was announced at the Venice Film Festival that Kidman had to leave early due to the death of her mother.

A statement written by Kidman and read aloud by Babygirl director Halina Reijn during what would have been the actress’ acceptance speech for best actress for her role in Babygirl, said, “I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her.”

“She shaped me, she guided me and she made me. I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina,” she added.

“The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken,” the statement concluded
