The couple, who met while filming season 3 of ‘Fargo’, will once again play each other’s love interests in ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’.

Since Fargo concluded with its fifth and final season, Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been itching for another opportunity to work with her husband Ewan McGregor.

When McGregor became an executive producer on A Gentleman in Moscow, a series based on Amor Towles’ novel of the same name, he thought Winstead would be perfect for the role of Anna Urbanova, an actress caught in an on-again-off-again relationship with his character Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov.

“Ewan was reading the novel and he started slyly mentioning to me, in very subtle ways, that there was a great female character in the book,” she told Variety. “He was definitely hinting to me that it could be a good opportunity for us to work together.”

Winstead was initially hesitant about the role. She wanted to accept the part because she was truly interested in the character, not because it would provide the couple another opportunity to work together. So when they were able to flesh out her character into something more concrete, Winstead was on board.

“I’ve been dying to do something properly together since we did ‘Fargo.’ I really didn’t expect it to be as great of a role as it ended up being. I just felt so lucky,” she admitted.

Winstead and McGregor met on the set of the FX series Fargo in late 2016 as they both joined the show during season 3, playing each other’s love interests. At the time, McGregor was still married to his now ex-wife Eve Mavrakis and Winstead was married to her now ex-husband Riley Stearns.

After their respective marriages ended, the costars began dating.

After nearly four years of dating, the twosome welcomed their first child together in June 2021. They also tied the knot the following April.

In December 2023, Winstead told PEOPLE why she and her husband “love to work together.”

“Sometimes, especially when you have kids, just to have the opportunity to get to be together and not be in separate places — the gratitude that comes with that elevates the experience even more, because you’re just so grateful to get to be in the same place at the same time,” she explained.

“And beyond that, we just love acting together,” she added. “I can’t imagine a more fun partner to get to do that with, so it’s great.”
