Celebrity Texas Longhorns supporter Matthew McConaughey has blasted the football team’s fans for throwing bottles onto the field after it disagreed with an on-field call against Georgia last weekend.
The home crowd was left incensed in Austin when an interception for the then-top-ranked Longhorns against now-No 2 Georgia was initially wiped out by a pass-interference penalty.
In protest, Longhorns fans threw hundreds of bottles on the field to make their displeasure known, before head coach Steve Sarkisian could be seen walking over and urging them to stop.
Yet incredibly, their astonishing protests seemed to do the trick when the decision was eventually overturned.
‘Longhorn nation and specifically our (Darrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium) student section, M.O.C. McConaughey coming at you here. First off, you were electric Saturday night when we hosted Georgia. Bravo,’ his social-media statement started.

Fans threw bottles on the field after disagreeing with a call the referees eventually reversed
‘Let’s continue to bring it. Even though our Horns didn’t get the W, you created a measurable home field advantage. But let’s get real about the bottle bombing the field glitch we had. Not cool. Bogey move.’‘Yeah, that call was BS, but we’re better than that. Longhorn Nation knows how to show up, show out like no other, and still keep our class. So, going forward let’s clean that kind of BS up and leave that behind us for good. We have to shake hands on that.’
‘Next up, November 9th, when the Gators come to town, let’s make sure they feel the heat, can’t hear the play calls, and burn their timeouts – but remember nothing hits OUR field except that Texas fight. Til then, root hard and Hook em. McConaughey.”
Georgia-Texas had the largest television audience of any college football game last weekend with 12.9million tuning in.
Texas fans littered the north end of their field with bottles and other trash when the pass-interference penalty had appeared to wipe out Jahdae Barron’s 36-yard interception return to the Georgia 9 late in the third quarter.
Sarkisian, who was initially irate at officials for the call, then headed toward the far corner of the field and signaled to the student section to settle down and quit throwing things.
As the debris was being picked up, officials were discussing the play and picked up the flag for Barron’s contact with Georgia’s Arian Smith before the pick.
Two plays later, Quinn Ewers threw a 17-yard touchdown to Jaydon Blue to get the Longhorns to 23-15 after they had trailed 23-0 at halftime.
However, Georgia went on to add another seven points in what proved a convincing 30-15 victory on the road in Texas.
