Matthew McConaughey’s response to rumors about a hair transplant, debunking speculation and revealing his natural hair regrowth secret. Despite previous considerations for hair plugs, McConaughey opted for a topical treatment that revitalized his hairline, dismissing false claims from a doctor regarding a hair transplant. The actor also reflects on his approach to stress and envy, showcasing a positive mindset shift. At 54, McConaughey embraces aging and maintains a thriving presence in Hollywood.
Matthew McConaughey is setting the record straight about rumors he’s had a hair transplant, more than two decades after he almost went bald.
The Magic Mike star, 52, had revealed in his memoir, Greenlights, that he shaved off all of his tresses after experiencing significant hair loss in the late 1990s.
“How did it grow back? That’s a great mystery,” the Hollywood actor said in a recently published interview with LADBible, with whom he shared his haircare routine.
Addressing his hair loss, he went on: “You can go back and look at things like The Wedding Planner [which came out in 2001] and those things; I mean, you’ll see, I was losing.
“I got a picture: Turn of the millennium party in 2000 in Jamaica, I was looking down laughing and there was a baseball-sized bald spot on the top of my head.”
After being advised that shaving off his hair and starting from scratch was the best bet, the Texas native shed his locks in the hope of achieving more voluminous regrowth.
Explaining how he went on to achieve a lustrous mane, the actor said that it took “manual labor” and lot of commitment.
He said: “I get this topical ointment and I rub it into my scalp, once a day for 10 minutes. […] I was fully committed to it—no Propecia, no nothing, it was just manual labor.
“All I can tell you is it came back. I have more hair now than I had in 1999.”
“The same thing I was rubbing it down with I still do today,” McConaughey added of the topical ointment he uses. “I’m not gonna quit to see if like, ‘Oh, do I need to do it anymore?’ I’m not taking that chance.”
Once McConaughey’s hair regeneration project proved successful, he then faced speculation that he had undergone a transplant. The actor was later informed that a surgeon had been taking credit for his purported hair transplant.
The actor recalled how he ran into a Beverly Hills doctor, who told him that his name was brought up on an annual basis at an international hair transplant convention. There, the surgeon claimed he had given McConaughey hair plugs.
He said: “[The Beverly Hills doctor] goes, ‘Can I just look at your hair? Can I just feel it and see?’
“I said, ‘Yeah man.’ He goes, ‘You don’t have transplants.’ I said, ‘That’s what I said, of course I don’t.’ He goes, ‘I can’t wait to bust this guy’s nut next year when he raises his hand.'”
McConaughey added of the surgeon in question: “He’s busted, man!”
During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan back in 2017, the star specified his product of choice when he said: “I started rubbing my head with this stuff called Regenix and damn if I didn’t bring [my hair] back.”Matthew McConaughey has set the record straight on how he was able to regenerate a thick mane of hair after experiencing the onset of baldness in the late 1990s. The actor revealed that he shaved his hair off after a trip to Jamaica more than 20 years ago. He is pictured right in 2000.
