Matthew McConaughey has long been known as the quintessential Hollywood leading man. It’s not just the actor’s Oscar-winning performances that have earned him that title, but also his dashing good looks. Since the 90s, the actor has been positioned as one of the entertainment industry’s leading heartthrobs.

This reputation even led to McConaughey winning the tag of People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2005. It helped that the actor was a frequent leading man in rom-coms for a time. But while Matthew McConaughey is undoubtedly easy on the eyes, the actor’s personal hygiene leaves something to be desired. In past interviews, McConaughey has stated that he does not use deodorants, and this caused an issue between himself and Kate Hudson at one point.

The personal grooming habits of Matthew McConaughey have managed to pop up in several interviews from time to time. When McConaughey was making Fool’s Gold with Kate Hudson, the duo would argue over the actor’s natural musk. In an interview reported by LADbible, the actor recalled Hudson’s attempts to have him wear deodorant for his frequently shirtless scenes:

She always brings a salt rock, which is some natural deodorant, and says, ‘Would you please put this on?’ I just never wore it. No cologne, no deodorant. The women in my life, including my mother, have all said, ‘Hey, your natural smell smells, one, like a man, and, two, smells like you.

Considering that Hudson and McConaughey are still good friends, his grooming habits clearly did not put her off too much. The actor got even more explicit in a 2005 interview with People magazine. When asked what a man should smell like, McConaughey bluntly replied, “A man. I haven’t worn deodorant in 20 years.”

Despite his questionable hygiene choices, Matthew McConaughey has steadily climbed the ranks of the Hollywood A-list to become a global superstar. His lack of deodorant has not stopped the actor from being a part of big film crews and even bigger movies, even though fans on social media have some strong feelings about the issue:

While Kate Hudson begged him to use a deodorant, not all his co-workers were complaining about the smell he brings to the set. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown took it upon herself to see how not putting on deodorant has affected Matthew McConaughey’s personal smell. Brown worked with the actor on Tropic Thunder. In an interview with SiriusXM, Brown revealed her olfactory investigations regarding McConaughey. And she was happy to reveal that the results were quite positive:

“He does not have an odour. He smells like granola and good living. He has a sweet, sweet scent. That is just him, and it’s not musty or crazy.”

Clearly, whatever personal hygiene routine McConaughey has adopted is working for him. So fans can safely go back to being mesmerized by the actor’s good looks without worrying that he might not smell as good as he looks.
