An old video showing a legendary film composer body-shaming a former American Idol runner-up has created outrage among fans after it recently resurfaced online. A viral clip features a contestant from a previous season of the reality TV show and a celebrity mentor who they share a special relationship with. Shockingly, the music legend has come under fire in the past when he sparked backlash for a tone-deaf caption on Instagram. A couple of years have passed since then, but the internet never forgives and neither does it forget.

A video of David Foster calling Katharine McPhee “ fat ” has circulated on social media and earned the ire of the former American Idol contestant’s fans.

A resurfaced video by jordycray went viral on TikTok and shows Katharine McPhee’s now husband, David Foster, calling her “fat.”

The video was posted in January 2024 shows the husband-and-wife duo on stage during a joint performance when Katharine talks about how she met David in 2006. Katharine points out to an old photo of herself on a screen behind her and says, “You may not know we met 17, almost 18 years ago when I was a little chubby and cheerful contestant on American Idol.” David, who used to be a guest mentor in season 5 replies, “Oh, yeah, you were fat.”

The audience laughs along at David’s fat-shaming comment. However, an embarrassed Katharine responds, “I was a little chubby, okay? I was just young.” Katharine, who is 40 years old now, was in her early 20s when she participated in American Idol season 5. David is currently 74 years old. The singer-songwriter finished as the runner-up to Taylor Hicks. The same season also included Chris Daughtry and the late Mandisa Hundley, who died at the age of 47 in April 2024. Fans have been rushing to the comments section of the viral video to criticize the music legend.

Katharine has also talked about her experiences of disordered eating throughout her pregnancy in 2021. David could have chosen to not agree with Katharine when she called herself “chubby” but it’s also not the first time that he’s faced backlash for commenting on Katharine’s post-baby body after sharing a photo of her in a bikini. The American Idol alum had defended her husband and tried to shut down her online critics by asking them to not get offended by what people who have zero impact on their lives post about. Katherine might ask them to move on once again.
