Lions COO Mike Disner and Lions radio announcer Lomas Brown revealed that the retired six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver would be added to the team’s ring of honor, the Pride of the Lions.
Johnson heard the news during his second annual Calvin Johnson Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic at Detroit Country Club.
The 38-year-old wiped tears out of his eyes while sharing his reaction to the announcement.
“I’m a crier man … I get it from my dad,” Johnson said in front of fans.
He then sat down with Adams during her Up & Adams Show and still showed his emotions.
She asked Johnson how he felt about the honor.
“It’s a tear-jerker,” Johnson said while also wiping away a tear.
“I don’t like surprises for that reason. You might catch me and my emotions.
“I didn’t see it coming.
Adams then brought up Johnson being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2021 and asked “What makes Detroit honoring you a little bit special?”
“I’ve been to so many cities. Detroit, they have a true fanbase,” he said.
“Not just for football but for baseball and hockey.
“They are Detroit fans through and through and if you come to this city and you put down and you work your tail off, they [will] love you.

“They pay attention.”
Johnson was drafted No. 2 overall in the 2007 NFL Draft.
He was a three-time All-Pro for the Lions and was their all-time leader in three receiving categories, finishing with 731 receptions for 11,619 yards and 83 touchdowns.
The star wideout would be nicknamed Megatron for his seemingly supernatural abilities.
Johnson will be honored during a halftime ceremony of the September 30 game of Detroit’s Monday Night Football contest against the Seattle Seahawks.
