Stafford was on his way to possibly holding out in Los Angeles’ training camp.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported in June that Stafford had issues with his current contract and the lack of guaranteed money after the 2024 campaign.

McVay confirmed to reporters on Tuesday that Stafford and the Rams agreed to a new contract, and the two-time Pro Bowler appeared at practice.

“I am relieved,” McVay said, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

The 38-year-old also said that the negotiating process was done in a “healthy” manner for everyone.

McVay did share that the agreement is not a contract extension and is simply a reworking of the last years of Stafford’s deal.

Stafford signed a four-year extension worth $160 million with Los Angeles after their Super Bowl title in 2022.

However, the last two years of the deal has no guaranteed money.

After an injury-riddled 2022, Stafford put together a Pro Bowl season in 2023, completing 62.6 percent of his passes for 3,965 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 15 games.

Stafford reported for OTAs, mandatory minicamps, and was a full participant in the Rams’ offseason program.

He didn’t talk to the media during the spring.

Still, McVay continued to say he wanted to keep discussions with Stafford “in-house” until they solved the situation.

“It meant a lot because I felt like there was a lot of work to be gained,” McVay said Tuesday of Stafford’s appearance at training camp, per The Orange County Register.

“I thought we were able to make a lot of good progress as a team and Matthew was certainly an important part of that.”

McVay was also asked if there was a chance of Stafford holding out during training camp if the sides didn’t rework the contract.
