In his 2022 defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp opened up about experiencing abuse as a child. He revealed to the court that the abuse came at the hands of his late mother, Betty Sue. While on the stand, Johnny told lawyers that the atmosphere in the household was so volatile that he never truly felt safe.

“In our house we were never exposed to any type of safety or security, the only thing to do was stay out of the line of fire,” he shared (via Daily Mail). “My mother was quite unpredictable. She had the ability to be as cruel as anyone can be with all of us.”

He also revealed that, as a child, he didn’t realize the abuse that came from his mother was abnormal as it was all he had ever experienced: “I had a very interesting childhood. One that I thought was normal until a certain age.”

During his testimony, he went on to describe the graphic details of the physical abuse he was made to endure at home.

“She could become quite violent, and she was quite violent, and she was quite cruel,” he told lawyers. “There was physical abuse, certainly, which could be in the form of an ash tray being flung at you, or you’d get beat with a high heeled shoe, or a telephone, or whatever’s handy.”

He also described the need to “shield” himself whenever his mother walked past him because he “didn’t know what would happen.”

As a child, Johnny was deprived of a stable home life because his mother’s restlessness caused her to frequently move the family from place to place. Johnny was born in Kentucky and the family moved to Florida when he was seven years old, where they lived in a motel.

Along with his mother’s physical abuse, Johnny told the court that it was difficult always having to be the “new kid” when the family would move to a new place, and never forming a core group of friends.

His Mother’s Abuse Was Also Emotional

The abuse that Johnny Depp’s mother hurled on her family wasn’t just physical; the actor has revealed it was also emotional, which at times could be worse.

“The verbal abuse, the psychological abuse, was almost worse than the beatings,” he shared, before adding that the physical abuse led to pain that he “learned to deal with”.

Betty Sue would emotionally abuse her children by picking at their insecurities and insulting them with comments that she knew would hit them where it hurt. An example was her constant verbal attacks related to Johnny’s lazy eye, which developed as a result of a birth defect in the lens of his left eye that he had no control over.

“She would call me c–k eye, one eye, anything she could get to demean, humiliate,” he explained, admitting that the psychological abuse “tore us up.”

Johnny’s sister Christi Dembrowski also testified about being abused by their mother, confirming that both she and Johnny had vowed never to repeat the cycle of domestic abuse in their own homes when they grew up.

“Really early on as a young child,” she told the court (via People), “none of what was happening in our home felt good. And so, as I got older, both Johnny and I actually, we decided that once we left, once we had our own home, we were never going to repeat, ever, anything similar in any way to our childhood. We were gonna do it different.”

Johnny Depp was only a teenager when he started experimenting with drugs and alcohol. He started smoking when he was only 12 and, according to an interview he’d done with People, had done “every kind of drug there was by 14”.

The actor’s lifelong drug habits have been analyzed in his defamation trial. He has confirmed that his consumption of illegal substances wasn’t necessarily about recreation, but about coping with the stress inflicted by his tumultuous childhood and career pressure.

“It’s not like I took the pills to get high, I took the pills to get normal,” the star stated (via Deadline).
