Much of the ongoing appeal of “True Detective” can be attributed to the show’s elasticity. Each season of the HBO crime series introduces new characters and settings, and the writers brought in to oversee it have had the creative freedom to put their own stamp on the franchise. “True Detective: Night Country” was a perfect example, as showrunner Issa Lopez was able to put a shot of adrenaline into the series with her Alaska-set mystery, which is nominated for 19 Emmys tonight.
But while the fourth season earned high marks for its originality, Lopez maintains that she owes a great creative debt to Nic Pizzolatto’s original season. Speaking to IndieWire on the red carpet of the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Lopez heaped praise on Pizzolatto and explained that she hopes her upcoming Season 5 will be another extension of his creative legacy.
“The most important thing for me is, number one, understanding why that show was so powerful,” Lopez said. “People can’t forget it. Me, myself, can’t forget it. It created a feeling that there is a darker world beneath the surface of our everyday world. And I wanted to tap into that. So my whole message was, this is happening in the same world. The events that happened in the first season happened in the world of my ‘True Detective.’ It’s a continuation of the atmosphere and the feelings and the themes that were explored in the first season. That’s what I want to do with the next one.”
Lopez confirmed that her work on Season 5 has forced her to put her film career on the back burner, but she explained that her love of the “True Detective” universe made the opportunity worth the sacrifice.
“I have a movie that I stopped – and it is greenlit! – to make ‘Night Country.’ And the plan was to finish ‘Night Country’ and make the movie,” she said. “But what happened is HBO wanted Season 5, so I’m working on that and the movie is waiting for me. I miss cinema, but I love this universe. So I’m going to stay for one more iteration.”
Lopez’s comments echo similar remarks she made at the 2024 IndieWire Honors, where she received the Auteur Award for her work on “True Detective.” In her speech, she recalled being unfamiliar with the series when she was offered the job, but being compelled to take on the project after experiencing the brilliance of Season 1.
“Here’s a real science fact. There are no Mexicans in the Arctic, no Mexicans for a reason,” she said. “And then, I go home and watch a really good HBO show [‘True Detective’] that some American did.”
