No matter what votes and RT ratings suggest, fans will always consider Matthew McConaughey’s ‘True Detective’ S1 as the best.
Matthew McConaughey’s 2014 drama series True Detective, has truly been one of the most viewed, yet frustrating TV series of the past decade. According to reports, the quality varying wildly from season to season is one of the biggest reasons why fans found it difficult to monitor the characters constantly.

The 2014 drama series True Detective which incorporated unconventional cults and philosophies into its story of abuse and murder, featured the world-renowned faces, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in their gripping first season. With the duo making their way into the entertaining yet inconsistent show, they turned the S1 of the drama series into the pinnacle of the anthology.

Blending the mystery of each episode with compelling characters and well-paced storytelling, True Detective S1 soon turned into the best and most highly appreciated show. With repeated viewings, fans even started unearthing new mysteries and different layers of meanings. But, as the show proceeded with the next seasons, it somehow failed to maintain the same impact as Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s first season did.
True Detective Season 4 Beat Matthew McConaughey’s Season 1
Bringing in haunting visuals with a blend of spiritual meaning, True Detective came up with three more seasons after Matthew McConaughey’s gripping original. However, with each passing season, the show struggled with overly ambitious flashback sequences and storytelling. Somehow, fans witnessed a downfall in quality, after S1, which led to disappointing lows in the show.

Nonetheless, despite all odds, according to reports from X account Culture Crave, True Detective S4 turned out to be the best season in the entire show. Although fans have readily preferred Matthew McConaughey’s S1, the last season evidently garnered the most views – averaging 12.7M per episode. Further, it also received the highest rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, while S1 received 91%.
Netizens are Bewildered with the Vote After Disappointing Ending
Despite the disappointing finale, featured in True Detective S4, as the last season garnered the most praise, fans were bewildered by the report. Recalling how the finale literally sunk to its lowest when director and writer Issa López created a mirror image that paralleled Rust and Marty’s journey from S1, netizens slammed the report on X and mostly hailed Matthew McConaughey’s original.
Lastly, although the True Detective finale episode Night Country left behind too many unanswered questions, it set new records for the drama series. No matter what netizens had to say, True Detective S4 seemingly beat Matthew McConaughey’s S1 and turned into the most-viewed season in the HBO franchise. It appears that despite the finale, S4 became the only worthy successor of the series.
