True Detective season 5 will once again be a new experience to previous seasons, including the recent Night Country.

The show is an anthology, so every season of True Detective has been set in a different location following a different set of characters.

Aside from the anthology format, the show had some further changes for its fourth run – with Issa López replacing creator Nic Pizzolatto as showrunner, and the series gaining a subtitle.

However, it looks like Night Country was another one-and-done story, as López has told Variety that season 5 of True Detective will once again be distinct from what came before.

López told the publication that the fifth batch of episodes is currently “in the writing. And it’s a blast“, while noting that “It’s completely different. There’s different characters, different setting, different story — and I’m enjoying it like crazy.”

She also declined to comment when asked if season 5 will revolve around two women again, stating: “I will not tell you that yet – yet. But it’s a completely different adventure. Let’s put it that way.”

López also wouldn’t say if anything would carry over from season 4 to 5 in terms of story, but did note that she thinks fans will be “pleasantly surprised” by what’s in store.

The showrunner also shared her own thoughts once again on whether Kali Reis’ character Evangeline Navarro is alive or not – while noting that the story leaves space for the viewer’s interpretation.

“I think it’s up to you, really, truly,” she said. “But truly, if you look at it the way that Navarro has already gone into the ice and has already followed those voices­.

“The way she goes the second time is in peace, in light – I don’t think she’s dead.

“But I think that if you come to me and say she had this calling to let go and be with the women she lost, that’s OK too.”
