‘True Detective’ Was Just Nominated for 19 EmmysHBO

February marked the season finale of True Detective: Night Country, the Jodie Foster-led season of the critically acclaimed show. The series offers a new mystery every chapter, and this one has been wildly popular with fans. According to Variety, the first episode brought in 10.7 million viewers on HBO and Max combined within the first week, and they’re already clamoring for more.

As if that isn’t evidence enough of the show’s success, True Detective: Night Country received an astounding 19 Emmy nominations. Some of their feats include Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Cinematography, and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.

Foster also received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Anthology Series or Movie, and co-stars John Hawkes and Kali Reis are both in the running for Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress

So, will there be a fifth season of True Detective? Here’s what we know so far.

Has True Detective been renewed for season 5?

HBO confirmed on February 22 and True Detective will continue on for another season and Issa López, who helmed Night Country, will return as showrunner. (She also landed a new multiyear overall deal to create content exclusive to HBO and Max.)

López said in a statement on the renewal, “From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”

“Issa López is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed ‘True Detective: Night Country’ from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family,” Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said in a separate statement.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, season four has an even higher critical score than season one, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and received huge accolades. Season four is also the most watched iteration, per The Wrap, with 12.7 million average viewers, higher than the first season’s average of 11.9 million. That all looks good for another season with or without Foster and co-star Kali Reis.

What would True Detective season 5 be about?

Every season of True Detective always starts with a new murder, meaning it’s pretty unlikely the anthology series will return to Danvers (Foster) and Navarro (Reis). López and HBO have not yet shared ideas for the season 5 plot yet, so we’ll have to wait and see where the next chapter takes us.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, López suggested the tone of the new season will differ from season four.

“I’m dying for everyone to know because it’s very different and very exciting,” she said. “It’s even darker and even more twisted. I can’t wait to put it out there.”

In June, she told Variety, “[I’m] in the writing [process]. And it’s a blast. It’s completely different. Different characters, different setting, different story and I’m enjoying it like crazy.”
