At NYCC, The Penguin creator Lauren LeFranc revealed some of the inspiration behind the Sofia Falcone character. LeFranc said that the story of Rosemary Kennedy, the sister of President John F. Kennedy, inspired Sofia. Infamously, Rosemary was lobotomized when she was in her early twenties because her family found that she was erratic and difficult. At her father’s direction, she received the controversial surgery, which wound up a massive failure. This destroyed her life significantly, taking away most of her ability to walk and talk.
LeFranc saw this injustice as a perfect mirror on which to base the Sofia character’s experiences. She spoke of how audiences would respond to Sofia, saying, “you thought she was crazy just like all these other people did. But now, what do you think of her now that you know the truth?” This disturbing unveiling clearly shows how abused Sofia herself has been, and how the resulting villain was created by the actions that others administered upon her.
What Lauren LeFranc’s Sofia Falcone Comments Mean For The Penguin
LeFranc’s Comments Help To Contextualize Sofia’s Character
The Penguin has been built around building and then subverting audience expectations. Cristin Milioti’s Sofia has been the most effective version of this, especially after the latest episode. While she may reach some very dark and violent places in her work as the remaining daughter of the recast Carmine Falcone, it is clear that much of the person she has become was not by her own actions or designs. The younger Sofia shown in the series is more hopeful and believes in much of the world.
Unfortunately, this is all taken away from her by her father and the institutions around her. She is unfairly locked away in Arkham to face incredible destruction and abuse simply because some words and actions she has taken are not seen as acceptable by her father and his empire. These small actions led to an entire crumbling of her life and character. Seeing Rosemary Kennedy as an inspiration here helps to explain better how much preconceptions have been used to create such an effective and unsettling character.
Our Take On The Sofia Falcone Story Comments
The Penguin Clearly Has A Multitude Of Incredible Inspirations
It is clear that The Penguin is a brilliantly written show, and seeing the complex inspirations behind that is fascinating. I believe that characters like Oz and Sofia are some of the most compelling currently on television, and it seems that there is still much to uncover from each of their stories. Sofia being inspired by Rosemary Kennedy makes sense as a privileged young woman who had her father’s power used against her to destroy her, and hearing about those inspirations only helps to further explain the excellent characters in The Penguin.
