Did Disney Just Hint at 'The Acolyte' Getting a Season 2?

The Acolyte, Disney’s most recent Star Wars project, has generated a lot of controversy since its debut due to a number of incidents and major review-bombing moments. This surpassed all the previous controversies related to any Star Wars project, but the series came to an end after eight episodes in total.

The fans had been hoping for a second season, but it has recently been confirmed that Lucasfilm is not moving forward with The Acolyte and the series would not be getting a second season. This sparked new debates, of course, with some being happy that the series is ending, while others expressing their disappointment.

But, wherever you may think of The Acolyte ending, an insider claims that the decision to end the series came rather abruptly, that Lucasfilm had plans – up until very recently – to continue the series, and that it had even been given a soft “green light.” So, what happened?!

Before we continue, we’d like to stress that what we are reporting here is a rumor from an insider who claims to have sources at Disney. These sources have not been identified, and what you are about to read does not constitute official information, so take it with a grain of salt.

Now to the story. As we’ve said, The Acolyte has been canceled by Lucasfilm, and we won’t be getting a second season. While many people believed that this had to happen, Lucasfilm had not been so vocal about it, and, in fact, everything we’ve reported on earlier pointed to The Acolyte getting a second season, but it did not happen. And if you think we were delusional, then read the following tweet:

If you’re unable to open it for some reason, here is the full text:

BREAKING: According to my sources at Disney and Lucasfilm, the studio was IN FACT putting together a Season 2 writers room for #TheAcolyte back in February with Leslye Headland. AND had been quietly inquiring about the interest level and availability of directors for a Season 2 as recently as last month. The show definitely had a “soft” green light to continue. Oh and Disney’s internal language currently describes the show as “cancelled” despite what they’re saying publicly. So yeah, it was cancelled.

As said, we do not know if it is true or not, but this is certainly in line with all the reports we have written in the past weeks, so it wouldn’t surprise us if this indeed turned out to be the truth. We don’t know what happened, ultimately, as neither Disney nor Lucasfilm revealed anything, but the low viewership numbers, combined with Disney’s analysis of the series’ success at the recently-held D23, might have prompted Lucasfilm to axe the series.
