American Idol wrapped up its 22nd season in May when viewers crowned Abi Carter the winner over runner-up Will Moseley. Since then, speculation has continued swirling about Katy Perry’s replacement. The “Woman’s World” singer is gearing up to launch a musical comeback after seven seasons judging American Idol alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. Kelly Clarkson has already nixed the idea, and P!nk didn’t seem too keen either. Now, it appears another former Idol judge is out of the running as well.
Remember When Ellen DeGeneres Was a Judge On ‘American Idol?’
You probably don’t. In late 2009, American Idol announced that Ellen DeGeneres would replace longtime judge Paula Abdul for season 9. The daytime TV star reportedly signed a five-season contract in the tens of millions of dollars’ range.
DeGeneres made her Idol debut in February 2010, joining Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi on the judging panel. However, the Daytime Emmy winner never could find her groove. By July, she called it quits, saying the show “didn’t feel like the right fit for me.”
“It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for,” DeGeneres said in a statement.
She continued, “I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings.”
Ellen DeGeneres Says She’s Quitting Showbiz
Some viewers have wondered if DeGeneres might return to American Idol to fill Katy Perry’s chair. The 66-year-old comedian recently shut that down, however. DeGeneres is currently embarking on her farewell/comeback tour, “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up.” And according to her, that title is literal.
DeGeneres unexpectedly canceled four shows in Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle and Dallas. And during a June 30 show at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa, California, the comedian didn’t mince words when an audience member asked if they’d see her in Hollywood or on Broadway.
“Um, no,” she said. “This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.”
This declaration comes two years after “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” abruptly ended amid toxic workplace allegations. DeGeneres addressed those claims during the Santa Rosa show. She admitted she could be “demanding and impatient and tough,” but insisted, “I am many things, but I am not mean.”
