Carrie Underwood has spent nearly two decades as one of the top names in country music. She has largely stayed away from other styles, though from time to time, she will stray from the country twang that made her a superstar.
The American Idol winner–and future judge–scores a new hit on a number of Billboard charts this week. The singer’s latest track brings her to the top spot on a pair of lists she’s never conquered before.
“Leave a Light On (Take Away The Dark),” her duet with Papa Roach, debuts at No. 1 on both the Rock Digital Song Sales and Alternative Digital Song Sales charts. The track immediately becomes the bestselling single in both the rock and alternative fields, and now it’s become Underwood’s inaugural leader on those lists.
In its first tracking frame of availability, “Leave a Light On (Take Away The Dark)” sold 6,700 copies, according to Luminate. The track ranks as the No. 2 bestselling tune in the country, regardless of style, as it opens in the runner-up rung on the Digital Song Sales chart.
“Leave a Light On (Take Away The Dark)” also debuts on two other tallies, though it doesn’t come near the throne–or even the top 10. The single reaches the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts this frame. On the former, it enters at No. 40, while it performs better on the latter, where it launches at No. 25.
The new smash is Underwood’s first appearance on three of the four rankings mentioned above. She’s previously landed on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart, though it’s been years since she earned her debut placement.
In 2021, Underwood joined Needtobreathe on their song “I Wanna Remember,” which became a quick hit on the Rock Digital Song Sales tally. The tune spent three weeks on the list, and it climbed to No. 6, bringing the country favorite to the top 10 for the first time on a rock sales ranking.
“Leave a Light On (Take Away The Dark)” was originally released by Papa Roach as a solo track from their most recent album, Ego Trip. The cut was selected as the latest single from the project, and then new life was breathed into it after the band asked Underwood to join them. All funds generated from the collaboration will benefit nonprofits that work toward preventing suicides.
