Sure, by the time the Revenge of the Sith came out, fans were more satisfied with the story, but do you remember how much hate was directed towards Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace when it first came out?
The Prequel Trilogy did not receive much love upon its premiere, but its quality has been reevaluated over the years and today, more and more people love these movies, especially since the Sequel Trilogy failed to make significant progress in that aspect.
Building on that, a fan has recently gone back to the Revenge of the Sith video game – yes, that was the time when each film got a video game tie-in – which reveals an alternative ending for Lucas’ film. The ending wouldn’t make a lot of sense canon-wise, but it would make up for a hell of a “What If…?” story!
The Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith video game was released on May 5, 2005, a total of 10 days before the official premiere of the movie, effectively revealing the whole plot to the players, as well as 12 minutes of movie cutscenes, which was unprecedented at the time and basically unimaginable now.
The game received mixed to positive reviews, and while it is not one of the best Star Wars games of all time, it was a solid outing.
And while the game does actually follow the story of the movie and Lucas’ canon, it also features an alternative ending, which you can check out in the video below:
The revenge of the sith alternate ending is interesting

As you can see, in this alternative ending, Anakin is the one who prevails. The scene plays out exactly as in the movie, but Obi-Wan’s “high ground” warning doesn’t have the same effect, as Anakin is able to jump above and behind Obi-Wan, and then kill him, kicking him down near the lava river on Mustafar.
Then, Anakin also betrays his master – Darth Sidious (as Sith tradition dictates) – and becomes the sole ruler of the Galaxy, and the Empire as a whole.
Darth Vader thus triumphs in a very interesting and unexpected way, which is why this alternative ending is interesting. Sure, it is completely unrelated to the canon established in the Original Trilogy, but it would be interesting to explore as a “What If…?” scenario if Star Wars ever decides to go in that direction.
