A24 is landing the rights to a new Keanu Reeves film co-starring Spider-Man and MCU stars.
The next movie to star Keanu Reeves is preparing to land. After a competitive bidding situation in the Cannes market, A24 is reportedly scooping up the rights to the project with an eight-figure deal.
Per Deadline, A24 is securing the rights to the feature film The Entertainment System Is Down. The movie comes from two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund, the filmmaker behind the 2022 Palme d’Or winner, Triangle of Sadness. That movie was also a major player at awards season, as it was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards. The director, who also helmed the acclaimed film The Square, recently said he expects to debut his new film, The Entertainment System Is Down, at the Cannes Film Festival in 2026.
The movie has some big names as part of the cast. It was previously announced that Keanu Reeves would be among the stars, joined by Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man) and Daniel Brühl (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). Recently, it was reported that the cast would also include Samantha Morton (The Walking Dead) and Nicholas Braun (Succession).
The Entertainment System Is Down Is a Social Satire
A social satire, The Entertainment System Is Down will see chaos ensuing when the passengers of a long-haul flight are suddenly left without nothing to keep themselves occupied with the entertainment systems fail. Östlund and producer Erik Hemmendorff bought a real-life Boeing 747 to use for the filming of the movie, planned to last 70 days on a studio lot.
“We bought the plane and it was quite early in the process of the film. So suddenly it was like, ‘Oh, we have to make this film,’” Östlund said at Cannes.
Not all character details have been revealed, but it’s known that Dunst and Brühl will play a “doomed married couple” in the movie. Östlund also shared some details about those characters and how the boredom on the flight leads to very serious problems for their marriage.
“His wife is bored so after a while she sees her husband’s phone and decides to unlock it,” Östlund explained. “Turns out, she doesn’t know the code, so she uses his face to unlock the phone with face ID. She then finds out he has had multiple affairs with young women. So they’re going to be dealing with that during the flight. It’s an emotional roller coaster.”
