The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power became a well-liked hit series on Amazon in spite of a lot of negative feedback. The program has been renewed for a second season, as we have already mentioned in several reports, and the eight new episodes of the season will debut on August 29, 2024. It will be intriguing to see how everything turns out, particularly in light of the recent big revelations made by the showrunners.
As we have reported earlier, series showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne teased a very different second season, which will be focused on the villains, and that means that the series will be directly focused on Sauron, as his rise is going to be shown on the screen.
In light of that, we can report that the season is changing genres, in a way. Don’t worry; it will still remain a fantasy series, but the focus won’t be on the world-building aspect of the story but rather on the psychological intrigues and the influence that Sauron will have on Galadriel and Celebrimbor. This implies that Season 2 of The Rings of Power will be more of a psychological thriller than anything else.
If you’ve forgotten our earlier report on Sauron being the focus of Season 2, we will remind you what the showrunners said about the upcoming season and how Sauron will play a major role:
“This time, Sauron’s agenda sets everything in motion: Adar [Sam Hazeldine, taking over the role from Joseph Mawle] and his army of orcs; Galadriel [Morfydd Clark], Elrond [Robert Aramayo] and Gil-galad [Benjamin Walker] and their armies of elves – all of which will come crashing together in the most ambitious battle our show has seen yet, a battle from which many big players may not make it out alive.”

What does this mean going forward? Well, in terms of execution, we don’t have much to tell you as the reports we have did not indicate how the series plans to tackle the complexities of Sauron as a character, as well as the layered relationship he has with the other major characters.
What we do know, though, is that the series will be more character-driven and the character that will drive it all will be Sauron, which will make a lot of fans happy. In that aspect, the series will most likely become a psychological thriller, as the intrigues will be the main focus of the story, as well as Sauron’s influence on the people around him.
We are finally going to see how Sauron becomes the dreaded ruler he became in the books, and that certainly means that a genre shift is to be expected, and we’re quite excited about it!
