Speaking with TVLine, Sawai offered hopes that Cate will get more agency in the story of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2. The actor explained how, in her opinion, her character was often having events happen to her, rather than being an active force in what she was doing. She hopes that, upon returning from the Hollow Earth, she’ll have a more direct role to play in all the events that unfold going forward. Check out what Sawai had to say below:
I feel like Cate should have more agency. In Season 1, she is kind of the victim — thrown into it all and sometimes wanting to go back to her normal life. But after going down to Axis Mundi, she should come out as a different person. She’s seen stuff that she didn’t know before. They have answers and things to do now.
What Sawai’s Statement Means For Cate In Monarch Season 2
She Could Have A Much Bigger Role

Monarch season 1 ended with Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) sacrificing himself so Cate, May (Kiersey Clemons), and Keiko (Mari Yamamoto) could escape Hollow Earth in the Operation Hourglass vehicle. His absence leaves a major hole in the story, as Lee’s past was an essential part of season 1, taking up a majority of some episodes. Without him around, this would require another character to step into the spotlight, making the present-day protagonist the perfect candidate. Her agency in the story will no doubt be important as the story on Skull Island begins.
Although it’s unclear what the story of Monarch season 2 will entail, Apex Cybernetics is still at least seven years away from developing Mechagodzilla, which happens during Godzilla vs. Kong. Their research on Skull Island could prove useful to their endeavor, with Cate somehow becoming important for their endeavors. Given the length of time between the company’s current research and their development of the metallic Titan, the main character’s more direct involvement would be useful in exploring why this major gap takes place.
Our Take On Sawai’s Hopes For Cate’s Role In Monarch Season 2
We Think It Would Be A Positive Development For Her

With Sawai hoping Cate gets more to do, we think it would make sense for her to become a more central focus for Monarch season 2. While the ensemble cast of season 1 did a good job at establishing the large cast, having the story focused on a single character as the central lead can help the Apex storyline feel more focused. Although it’s still unclear what will happen going forward, it would be beneficial for her to have a more active role in learning more about what the company is doing on Skull Island.
