Several exciting Star Wars movies are in the works, including The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is set to release on May 22, 2026, with Jon Favreau directing. Other upcoming films include ones by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni, James Mangold, and Taika Waititi, some of which are still in development.
Movies like Lando, starring Donald Glover, and Rogue Squadron by Patty Jenkins are also planned, along with a film from Shawn Levy and a new project by Rian Johnson. Updates on most of these projects have been rare recently, especially after the announcement of a new Star Wars trilogy directed by Simon Kinberg.
In his latest reports, Daniel Richtman shared some rumors about three upcoming movies.
I can confirm what Jeff Sneider said that now the Shawn Levy Star War movie is the one to move forward before all the others. Rey movie still on hold. Mangold one needs more writing
Let’s break this down. In November 2022, it was reported that Shawn Levy was in talks to direct a Star Wars film after working on ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Stranger Things.’ However, in September 2023, Levy mentioned that the movie’s development started but got delayed due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. After the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ Levy confirmed he is still actively working on the film, which isn’t surprising.
On the other hand, there’s been nothing but bad news about Rey’s movie. Last we heard, the film was put on hold after the writer and Knight left the project. It’s also unclear what role Rey will play in the upcoming trilogy from Kinberg, and while her future in the franchise is being teased, the rumors around it are not positive.
Finally, about Mangold’s movie. This isn’t a rumor because Mangold gave an update himself just a week ago. He said that he and Beau Willimon are still working on the script and haven’t finished it yet, so it’s unclear what will happen next. He also mentioned that they are focused on completing the script before moving on to the next steps.
