The introduction of Grandmama in Wednesday season 2 was joined by another surprising new member of the extended Addams family, which bodes well for finally clearing up some long-standing confusion around Lurch. Despite being a staple in The Addams Family movies and TV shows for nearly a century, his background is still difficult to pin down.
Wednesday’s Addams family tree gets a far more substantial focus in season 2 than Netflix’s first outing, which includes a heightened presence for Morticia, Gomez, and Pugsley, as well as integrating Grandmama into the story. Additionally, this change has come with more focus on some of the less fleshed-out members of the family, such as Thing.
However, very little is still known about Lurch in Wednesday and the wider Addams Family franchise lore. That said, the introduction of Grandmama’s butler Varicose, who serves the same role and appears to be the same Outcast species as Lurch, will hopefully mean diving deeper into the iconic character’s mysterious background.
Varicose’s Introduction Hints Wednesday Will Finally Give An Official Confirmation Of Lurch’s Species

Lurch has always been representative of a Frankenstein’s Monster type of figure within the Addams Family world, but there hasn’t been a concrete indication of his species within Wednesday. However, now that Wednesday has a second character in his species through the introduction of Varicose, it looks like the series could finally answer more about their species and origins.
More likely, Varicose and Lurch are still representative of a Frankenstein’s Monster-esque creation. We still haven’t seen the two interact, and Joanna Lumley’s Grandmama Hester Frump hasn’t given much indication of her backstory with Varicose, but it’s possible that she and Lurch could even be related in some way.
Will Lurch & Varicose Ever Speak In Wednesday?

If we’re able to learn more about Lurch and Varicose’s species in Wednesday, then we’ll also hopefully get more clarification about their generally mute nature. Frankenstein’s Monster notably communicates more in grunts, noises, and very few words, which was also how the 1960s Addams Family sitcom’s Lurch communicated. We know, at least, that he could speak, which was best exemplified by Lurch’s iconic “You rang?” line.
However, Varicose and Lurch have yet to communicate through words by Wednesday season 2, part 1’s ending. When the Addams family members speak to both, they clearly understand and respond in their own nonverbal manner. That said, it’s still unclear whether either of them have the ability to verbally communicate, if it’s a limitation of their species in Wednesday, or if they generally just prefer not to.
