The Summer I Turned Pretty star and creator talk returning for potential future seasons: ‘Never say never’
“I would be so pumped,” author/showrunner Jenny Han says of continuing the Prime Video series past season 3.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is about to end with the upcoming third season, but the creator and star aren’t ruling out a return to Cousins Beach after the series finale airs.
As author/showrunner Jenny Han gears up for the release of the final 11 episodes of the Prime Video adaptation of her beloved book trilogy, she reveals that she’s not opposed to returning to this story at some point down the line, either for a sequel series or revival picking up with Belly (Lola Tung) and the other characters years later.

“Never say never â I never do,” Han tells Entertainment Weekly. “If the story is there, then I’m there. As a storyteller, you just get hit with inspiration all the time. If I had a really great idea that I was excited by, that I wanted to keep telling the story, and if [the stars] were excited to do it, then I would be so pumped. It really depends on if I feel like there is more story to tell.”
Series star Tung is equally into the idea of catching up with her character Belly in the future, in whatever form Han wants to create.
“I love working with this group of people and I love working with Jenny,” Tung tells EW. “I think it’s such a privilege to be any part of her cinematic universe, so if I was ever asked, I’m there.”
While the idea of potential future seasons of The Summer I Turned Pretty sounds great to the creator, Han admits the real draw for her would simply be to work with Tung and the rest of the cast members again â on any project.
“I love working with all these guys, that’s at the core of it,” Han explains. “I would always welcome working with them on this, or something else. Who knows what the future holds?”
The Summer I Turned Pretty follows the complicated love triangle of teen girl Isabel “Belly” Conklin and the two Fisher brothers, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). The season 2 finale ended just like Han’s second book in the trilogy, It’s Not Summer Without You, with Belly ultimately ceasing her tumultuous will-they-won’t-they dynamic with Conrad to be in a relationship with his younger brother/her best friend, Jeremiah. Season 3 will adapt the entirety of Han’s last book in the series, We’ll Always Have Summer, and will finally reveal which brother Belly ends up with (and whether it’ll be the same ending as the book).

Han feels “lucky” that Prime Video gave her the freedom to adapt her book trilogy into three seasons.
“Amazon Prime has been very supportive of my vision, and I haven’t felt a pressure to keep it going just to keep it going,” Han says. “It’s all about doing what’s best for the story. And you obviously want to give the fans a really satisfying ending.”
