An award-winning film about the life of a Holocaust survivor is making its metro Detroit debut Friday.
“My Name is Sara,” a film based on the true story of a 12-year-old Jewish girl’s survival during the Holocaust, will premiere at Maple Theatre in Bloomfield Township on Friday.
The film follows the story of Sara Góralnik-Shapiro, mother of Detroit philanthropist Mickey Shapiro, who survived the Holocaust after becoming a maid by convincing a farmer in Ukraine that she was Christian. Sara died in 2018.
Shapiro, who is the executive producer of the film, was born to Sara in a displaced persons camp, according to a news release.
“My mother was the only member of her family to survive the Holocaust and her determination and strength at such a young age – and throughout her life – has always inspired me to try and make the world a better place,” Shapiro said in a news release. “Her story needed to be told.”
The film was produced in association with the USC Shoah Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Steven Spielberg in 1994 that makes audio-visual interviews with survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocides.
“My Name is Sara” has been featured at more than 50 festivals internationally and has won five best feature awards, according to the release. The screenplay was written by David Himmelstein and features Zuzanna Surowy as Sara, Eryk Lubos, Michalina Olszanska and Paweł Królikowski.
The premiere will begin with matinee screenings at the Maple Theater, followed by an invitation-only reception, film screening and conversation with the film’s director, Steven Oritt, and Mickey Shapiro.
