Kate Middleton Caused ‘Panic at the Palace’ With Her Unconventional Wedding Day Decision
Kate Middleton made a surprising and unconventional wedding-day decision as she prepared to marry Prince William, sparking “panic at the palace.”
In April 2011, Kate wasn’t yet a royal family member. Nor did she have any official ties to the House of Windsor.
Therefore, as she worked with the royal household to plan her wedding day, she decided that she would forgo a traditional element of her arrival. She felt that since she was not yet a family member, she wanted a more modern mode of transportation to London’s Westminster Abbey.
According to a report by Marie Claire, who quoted from the book William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story by royal expert Russell Myers, Kate’s choice reportedly threw the palace into a tailspin.
“Courtiers were also surprised when Catherine announced her wish not to travel in the traditional horse-drawn Glass Coach, as used by Diana, Princess of Wales, as well as Queen Elizabeth,” Myers wrote.

Instead, the future royal arrived at her wedding, accompanied by her father, Michael Middleton, in a 1977 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI. The automobile was a gift to the queen for her Silver Jubilee from the manufacturer.
Myers added, “This prompted panic at the palace, who feared that an alternative vehicle might be necessary: in December 2010, vandals had splattered the car with white paint and smashed a rear window as [King] Charles and [Queen] Camilla were heading to the Royal Variety Performance.” Once the decision to use the vehicle was made, police were reportedly put on alert so no other mishaps would take place.
Kate Middleton’s arrival at her royal wedding to Prince William was an early sign she was determined to carve out her own path within the House of Windsor. She has since continued to embrace a more modern approach to royal life alongside her husband as they prepare for their future leadership roles.
