New Prime Video Series Is The Perfect Fallout Follow-Up After Video Game Adaptation Success

Custom image of Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean wearing a veil in FalloutPrime Video cashed in on the popularity of video game adaptations with 2024’s Fallout, and the streaming platform’s new gaming show already looks like the perfect follow-up. While Fallout is an incredibly successful video game franchise, it was hard to anticipate the TV adaptation becoming such a big hit, but the series completely surpassed most people’s expectations. Not only did it remain faithful to the source material, but Fallout introduced a completely new set of characters alongside a fresh story, helping it become one of 2024’s best TV shows, and after its success, Amazon quickly found a suitable alternative.

Fallout season 2’s release date update sets up an exciting future for the show as it may return sooner than expected, but the streaming platform has another video game show on the horizon that could be just as good. While details are limited on the project, the early signs are promising, and it looks like a clever way of continuing the momentum of gaming adaptations. Despite the genre being at an all-time high, Borderlands‘ box office disappointment proved that this style of content isn’t guaranteed to provide good results, but Prime Video’s unique new series does look promising.

According to Deadline, Prime Video is working on a new video game show titled Secret Level, which will be developed by Tim Miller and Blur Studio. Secret Level has been described as an animated anthology series that will focus on original short stories from various gaming titles. Although no images or trailers have been released for the project, some of the games that will feature in the show include SpelunkyNew World, and various PlayStation IPs, suggesting several exciting worlds will make their televised debut. With the streaming platform already doing Fallout justice, this new concept sounds incredible.

Secret Level offers the chance for underutilized titles to be explored further and gives them a chance to shine in a televised format.

Secret Level offers the chance for underutilized titles to be explored further and gives them a chance to shine in a televised format. The likes of Spelunky and New World have interesting locations and environments but are unlikely to be considered for large-scale adaptations, making Miller’s new show the ideal way to see more of them. Despite Fallout not being an anthology series, it managed to bring a number of original ideas to the franchise, meaning Secret Level should have plenty of freedom when it comes to expanding its gaming universes, which will help attract a large and versatile audience.

Secret Level Will Make Prime Video’s Impressive Animation Catalog Even Better

With Prime Video already having a selection of great animated shows, Secret Level looks like it could expand the platform’s catalog even further. The gaming series sounds like it will follow in the footsteps of 2022’s The Boys Presents: Diabolical, as the spinoff show was a successful anthology series with various animation styles, and it also received a strong reception, proving this sort of formula can work for the platform. Prime Video has various other animated hits though, and with Invincible being renewed for season 4, the superhero show remains one of the service’s flagship shows, hence the continued investment.

Hazbin Hotel also had a huge launch and accumulated incredible viewership numbers, earning itself a second season in the process. In addition, The Legend of Vox Machina received overwhelmingly positive reviews and has already had three seasons since its debut in 2022, showing how popular the project is. Prime Video even released Batman: Caped Crusader, a new animated show from the creators of the original Batman: The Animated Series. Given how many impressive shows are already on the streaming platform, Secret Level seems destined to continue this positive streak, proving how bright Amazon’s animated future is.

Why Secret Level Already Looks Destined To Succeed

The Video Game Show Already Has A Lot Of Positive Factors

Alongside having a fascinating premise, Secret Level has several other positive factors going for it. The success of Prime Video’s animated shows alongside the buzz around video game adaptations means it’s exactly what audiences are looking for right now, and it has the right platform behind it. Tim Miller and Blur Studios’ previous work is even more reassuring, as they worked on Netflix’s hit anthology show, Love, Death & Robots. The series also revolved around a variety of short stories set in different worlds, with a few episodes getting follow-ups or linking together, which is exactly what Secret Level needs.

Prime Video has several other video game adaptations in the works such as Like a Dragon: Yakuza , as well as a live-action Tomb Raider universe.

Building on the source material of each video game and potentially having some universes overlap could make for great entertainment, and with Miller behind the creative process, the show couldn’t be in safer hands. The fact that Spelunky and New World are the first games announced for the show is also encouraging, as it highlights that Secret Level won’t just prioritize popular franchises like Fallout and will instead try and flesh out other detailed worlds. Therefore, as long as the series can get a wide range of IPs, there is no reason Secret Level won’t be a massive success.
