Stephen Graham teases the possibility of Adolescence season 2 after its massive Netflix success.
Neither Stephen Graham nor his wife and producing partner, Hannah Walters, had any idea that their four-part series, Adolescence, would explode in popularity, topping Netflix charts in 80 countries, including India, Saudi Arabia, and Australia. In a conversation with Variety, Graham, who joked about “not having a job” just before the show’s release, teased the possibility of a Season 2, despite Adolescence being designed as a standalone limited series.
The show follows a British family whose world is turned upside down when their seemingly ordinary 13-year-old son is arrested for murder. With its unique one-shot filming technique, Adolescence set itself apart from typical crime dramas.
Will there be an Adolescence season 2?
Graham and Walters have acknowledged that Netflix has likely reached out. “Possibly,” Graham teased with a smirk. “Let’s see how the figures are.” He continued, “But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story.” Walters, however, is cautious about following up such a powerful story. A direct prequel is off the table, but she sees potential in exploring new narratives using the same one-shot format. “But there’s so much mileage in the one-shot and so much mileage in investing into human nature again and looking at something else. But yeah, everything’s looking good … everyone’s happy, shall we say?” she told Variety, leaving the door open for a fresh concept within the same storytelling framework. Globally, the show managed to pull 24.3 million views in its first four days and skyrocketed to 66.3 million within two weeks. Matriarch Productions, the company founded by Graham and Walters in 2020, has already delivered acclaimed projects like Boiling Point and A Thousand Blows. A second season of A Thousand Blows is already completed, while other projects, including indie films, are reportedly in works. The duo revealed that there are even discussions about incorporating Adolescence into school curriculums, something Walters is actively advocating for. While nothing is set in stone, the overwhelming success of Adolescence makes a follow-up almost inevitable, whether it’s a continuation or a fresh story told in the same style. Earlier show’s co-creator Jack Thorne during an interview with ITV said, “Jamie’s story is finished” when asked about a second season. He said, “I don’t think there’s anywhere more we can take Jamie, so I don’t think there is a series two.” When pressed about a spin-off focused on Katie, Thorne said, “I don’t think we’re the right people to tell Katie’s story.” He left Katie, and similar stories about girls like Katie, to other creators, stating that those shows should be made.
