Netflix’s Adolescence has taken the world by storm since arriving on the streaming site on 13th March. The show has been praised for its incredible storytelling, impeccable cast including newcomer Owen Cooper, and its unique one-take filming style.
Given the huge interest and success of the show, fans have been speculating whether there’d be a second season to the four-part limited series, and co-creator Stephen Graham has now given a very surprising update on the possibility of this.
Speaking to Variety about the rumors, Graham said: “We’ll see how the figures are,” adding, “There’s the possibility of developing another story.”
Graham previously told Tudum that they wanted to “end” the story where it began in Jamie’s room, so this is a change of tune for the actor. And he isn’t the only one to comment on these rumors, with actress Amelie Pease (who plays Jamie’s sister Lisa) recently sharing her views.
In an exclusive interview with Cosmopolitan UK, Amélie said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up going for a second season.”
Read on for all our theories on what Adolescence season 2 could be about, including possible cast and whether it’s likely…
Will there be an Adolescence season 2?
Netflix
Co-creators Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne told Tudum that they always wanted to end the show in Jamie’s bedroom—where it all started, and that’s exactly where season 1 concludes. “We knew that we wanted to end it in that room. We wanted the journey to finish where it began,” Stephen said. “This is where the person who Jamie became was created.”
That said, fans (we) have expressed their hopes for a second season to explore the impact of the story more.
While not common, it’s not unheard of for Netflix to renew a show after fan pressure. One example of this is the revival of Arrested Development after its cancellation on Fox.
And given Stephen and Amélie’s comments, it sounds like the team could be pondering the idea.
What would Adolescence season 2 be about?
Netflix
There were only four episodes in Adolescence, so there’s lots of questions that were left unanswered, such as how Katie’s parents felt, what happened to Jamie’s friend Ryan who supplied him with the murder weapon, and how long would Jamie get sentenced to?
All of these topics could make up episodes for a second season.
After watching Adolescence, one viewer took to X (formerly known as Twitter), and suggested a a second season from the POV of Katie’s family.
“It would be great if Stephen Graham etc could write series 2 from the murdered girl and her family’s perspective. This is genuinely one of the best dramas I’ve seen; the storyline, the acting, the message etc it was first class. It should be shown from age 12 and in schools,” the viewer wrote.
Who might be in the Adolescence season 2 cast?
As it stands, there are no plans to make a second season of Adolescence, so this is purely speculation.
But, if there was a second season, we’d love to see Owen Cooper return as Jamie Miller. And we’d expect to see Jamie’s parents, Eddie (Stephen Graham) and Manda (Christine Tremarco), as well as his sister, Lisa (Amélie Pease), attending the trial, while his lawyer Paul Barlow (played by Mark Stanley) would defend him.
Netflix
Ashley Walter’s DI Luke Bascombe and Faye Marsay’s DS Frank could also make an appearance. Meanwhile, Erin Doherty received praise for her portrayal of Briony Ariston, the clinical psychologist assigned to Jamie’s case. With Jamie on trial, it’s possible she could appear in a second season.
It’s also likely that we’d see some new cast joining the show if a second season was confirmed.
It could also continue as an anthology series, in which case season 2 would be about a brand new crime.
Where would Adolescence season 2 be filmed?
Netflix
Adolescence was filmed at Production Park, which is a studio facility in South Kirby, West Yorkshire. The school scenes were filmed at a school in Sheffield, while some of the street scenes took place in Wakefield or London.
With most of the same settings being used, we’d expect a second season to be filmed in the same areas with a new set being built or locations being chosen for the court and other homes.
