Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters are having a terrific start to the new year. The married couple, who often work alongside one another as actors and also as producing partners, are unsurprisingly thrilled that their latest series, Adolescence, has blown the roof off of Netflix. Not only are its viewership numbers continuing to soar, breaking records along the way, but the production did what Graham and his co-creator and writer Jack Thorne were hoping — forcing folks to get serious about a difficult conversation. Now that most of the world has already binged the four-part miniseries, one question is on the top of everyone’s mind — will there be a second season? The term “miniseries” says it all, as the production was meant to hit audiences hard with its short run and have that be the end of the harrowing story. But, with its massive success, the chance for a continuation is out there.
Recently speaking with Variety, Graham had a cheeky answer for the interviewer who asked him about a follow-up installment, telling them,
“Possibly, let’s see how the figures are. But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story.”
What Would Season 2 of ‘Adolescence’ Look Like?
At this point in time, no announcements have been made by Graham, Walters, Netflix, or any other entity close to Adolescence about a follow-up season. But, where there’s viewership numbers there’s money, and where there’s money, there’s always the chance for a continuation of the story, even if that wasn’t the original plan. On the other hand, there’s also the possibility of using the show’s unique one-shot filming style to shift the focus from Owen Cooper’s Jamie Miller to another troubling tale.
Shutting down what wouldn’t work while teasing what could, Walters added,
“A prequel to Adolescence, that’s certainly not going to happen. But there’s so much mileage in the one-shot and so much mileage in investing into human nature again and looking at something else. But yeah, everything’s looking good… everyone’s happy, shall we say?”
The one-shot episodes truly captivated audiences and made them think about how much work goes into a production of that style in order to keep things looking seamless. Meanwhile, the story at the center of Adolescence has sparked a conversation in homes around the world and even in the world of politics after the UK’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, praised the importance of the series. Adolescence has undeniably brought an important topic to light, so it would be wonderful if the creative team was given a platform to keep the conversation flowing, whether that be through the first season’s story or another.
Adolescence is now streaming on Netflix.
