Since the historical drama, The Leopard dropped on Netflix, fans have been eager to know about a possible renewal. Based on the classic novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, The Leopard premiered on March 5, 2025. Netflix has however not renewed The Leopard for Season 2 yet.
The plot draws from the life of Don Fabrizio Corbera, the Prince of Salina, and his aristocrat family during the Italian unification in the 1860s. Directed by Tom Shankland, Giuseppe Capotondi, Laura Luchetti, there are six episodes in the limited series. Each episode of the show is an hour long and delves deep into the political upheaval during 19th century Sicily.
Netflix has not confirmed or revealed any details of The Leopard Season 2. As per Tudum By Netflix, The Leopard is a ‘limited series’ hence there is little to no chance for the return of the Italian period drama. Moreover, the series is based on the novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, hence extending the plot would mean diversion from the classic storyline.
Netflix tends to look at several factors to determine any show’s renewal, such as production cost, viewership, and ratings. The Leopard Season 1 has garnered an average rating of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.3/10 rating on IMDb. An official announcement regarding the cancellation or possible renewal is awaited.
What is The Leopard about?
The Leopard takes the viewers to the tumultuous 1860s when Italy was on the verge of unification led by General Giuseppe Garibaldi and his Red Shirt army. The plot is set during the final day of the unification when Garibaldi calls a war on Sicily.
However, aristocrats like Don Fabrizio, Prince of Salina, do not seem too elated about the events as the revolution was gaining strength and the Red Shirts were turning violent and attacking everybody related to the Bourbons.
Meanwhile, Trancendi, Don Fabrizio’s nephew and the Prince of Falconeri joins Garibaldi’s Red Shirts. Corbetta, Don Fabrizio’s elder daughter, falls in love with Trancendi while he marries the mayor’s daughter, Angelica. The series has various elements of political wars, love affairs, and betrayals.
If The Leopard Season 2 is picked up by Netflix, the story could unfold Concetta’s reign.
The Leopard Season 1 saw Don Fabrizio finally coming to terms with the new Italy. Don Fabrizio or The Leopard dies in the finale due to a brain tumor. On the other hand, his eldest daughter, who was married to Count Bombello, breaks her engagement. However, she does not get back with Trancedi, instead she focuses on maintaining her father’s estate after his death. Corbetta skillfully, with the help of Trancedi, saves her family land from Sedara, Angelica’s father.
The cast of the series includes Kim Rossi Stuart as Don Fabrizio and Benedetta Porcali as Concetta, his eldest daughter. It also features Saul Nanni as Trancedi, Fabrizio’s nephew who was set to marry Concetta but falls in love with the mayor’s daughter Angelica (Deva Cassel). The additional cast includes Franceso Colella, Paolo Calabresi, Greta Esposito and Astrid Meloni.
