Although Larian Studios has stated that it is not going to work on the next installment in the series or a DLC, it remains very active with the community and shares intriguing behind-the-scenes details about the game. Recently, publishing director Michael Douse shared an incredible fact about the game: the staggering amount of playtime it has accumulated on Steam Deck alone, leaving fans and players in awe.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has left such a long-lasting impression that it feels like the game was launched just yesterday, but in reality, it has been over a year since its full release. The game, developed by Larian Studios, officially launched in August 2023 but it is still going strong, continuing to hit major milestones and capturing the imagination of RPG fans worldwide.
Recently, publishing director Michael Douse revealed that the game has now been played for over 17,223,529 hours on the Steam Deck alone. While the stats may not be a ‘traditional’ milestone like a sales figure or a holiday update, the sheer scale is hard to ignore. Douse even joked and suggested that the studio should release a “special edition 100w battery” for the Steam deck.
Over 17,223,529 hours of Baldur’s Gate 3 has been played on Steam Deck. We should partner with someone to do a special edition 100w battery. A little bag of holding, you know, for ur juice.

To put this into perspective, 17.2 million hours equals about 1,965 years, a duration so long that if players jump back that same amount of time, they would find themselves in the midst of the early days of the Roman Empire and Jesus would still be alive. In fact, Jesus was born around 4 to 6 BCE which means he was alive less than 2,000 years ago, which is further proof of just how vast these numbers can feel when you stretch them out through time.
But beyond the joke, this statistic really highlights how enormous this achievement is. To fully understand, let’s break it down a bit further. 17.2 million hours represents an almost incomprehensible amount of playtime, especially when you consider that the Steam Deck audience is just one fraction of the total Baldur’s Gate 3 player base.
If players factor in all the hours spent on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X versions of the game, as well as the gameplay on other handheld devices, the actual amount of playtime would be so much higher. This goes to show the popularity of the game and why it made the RPG genre mainstream once again single-handedly.
Players Looking Forward to Future Milestones

One of the biggest reasons for this sustained success of Baldur’s Gate 3 has been the attention paid to its modding community. In September 2024, Larian achieved another milestone where it reached 50 million mod downloads since Patch 7 was released, which officially introduced modding support.
From the achievement, it’s clear that mods have become a vital part of the experience and will continue to make the game enjoyable for years to come. Some mods even allow players to tweak the narrative itself or add new elements to the game’s complex Dungeons & Dragons mechanics. These user-generated additions further keep the game fresh and ensure that no two playthroughs are alike.
As Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to make waves in the RPG and gaming communities, it’s exciting to think about what’s next. Given the game’s track record, it’s likely that Larian Studios will continue to support the game with new content and updates for years to come.
In the end, whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer just jumping into the action, there’s no denying that this RPG has had a lasting impact on the gaming landscape, and its time at the top is far from over.
