Agatha All Along premiered its fourth episode this week, centered around the theme of Trial by Fire. In this episode, we uncovered the secrets surrounding Alice’s family, explored Teen’s Sigil, and confirmed the existence of the Daughters of Liberty within the MCU.
Following the loss of their Green Witch, Sharon Hart, in last week’s episode, the coven realized they needed to find a replacement. To address this, they cast a summoning spell in hopes of attracting a new Green Witch.
The Green Witch they summoned turned out to be more than they expected, especially for Agatha, as it was Rio Vidal who emerged from the ground. Although we’re not meant to know this yet, a Marvel merchandise leak has confirmed that Rio is actually Lady Death.
Throughout the episode, Agatha and Rio exchanged barbs, with several hints suggesting that Rio is there to collect some souls. One particularly intriguing scene that foreshadows a dark future for Agatha occurs during the trial itself.
In the recording studio where the trial takes place, Rio confronts Agatha directly. She wastes no time threatening Agatha, implying that she is ready to kill her, to which Agatha responds that the timing isn’t right. Rio then “confirms” that someone or something is indeed after Agatha.
Rio: I’m feeling impatient. I’m feeling like I wanna cause some damage.
Agatha: You’re too early.
Rio: It wasn’t up to me. Magic as it does took the path of least resistance, and ferried the closest most appropriate candidate down, or up.
The second quote suggests that Sharon Hart’s death occurred because Agatha was unable to die, leaving the rest of the coven facing a similar fate until Agatha’s time comes. Throughout the scene, Agatha attempts to negotiate a truce with Rio, who admits she is there for the coven’s “bodies.”
It’s now evident that Agatha is marked for death, leading to several theories about why that is. Like many witches, Agatha had an unnaturally long lifespan due to magic, and with her powers diminished, it’s possible that Rio serves as the grim reaper come to collect her soul.
There may be a history between Agatha and Rio, suggesting a past deal that Agatha managed to escape through her magic. Now that her magic is gone, she must confront the consequences. Until Agatha is ready to accept her fate, she may be forced to witness the deaths of those around her.
Another theory posits that Agatha made a deal with Rio, trading her life for her son, Nicholas Scratch. However, that deal did not go as planned, and now Rio has returned to collect.
There are hints of a romantic history between them, with Rio stating at the end of the episode that Agatha is her “scar,” a reminder of the painful choices she had to make.
This deal seems more plausible given Agatha’s apparent ability to delay her death and her admission in episode 1 that their agreement is the reason Rio cannot kill her. Whether Agatha exchanged her life for her son’s or vice versa remains unclear.
