The Star Wars franchise, one of the most iconic and beloved in fiction, features a vast array of characters, with Obi-Wan Kenobi standing out as one of the most popular. Obi-Wan represents a deep moral code and a strong sense of duty, faithfully upholding the Jedi Code even in the face of adversity, making him a quintessential Jedi with a profound philosophy. Although the role of Obi-Wan has been portrayed by two actors over the years, Ewan McGregor has become THE actor that most people think of.
McGregor, who has portrayed Obi-Wan for 25 years, remains hopeful about returning to the role despite the conclusion of his recent series. He believes there are still more stories to tell and continues to hold out hope for future opportunities.
In a recent interview with Variety, the Trainspotting actor reiterated his desire to reprise his role as Obi-Wan.
I really do hope we get a chance to do another one, between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think there’s another few stories to tell in there.
This isn’t the first time McGregor has expressed interest in returning for another season of his standalone show. About a year ago, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that while a second season isn’t entirely out of the question, it’s currently unlikely given the plethora of new content announced during the Star Wars Celebration event.
However, the potential for a Season 2 remains intriguing—if it ever comes to fruition. There’s nearly a decade of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s self-imposed exile on Tatooine between the end of Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 1 and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope that could be explored. Delving into these years of Kenobi’s exile could be incredibly fascinating.
McGregor isn’t alone in hoping for his return; Hayden Christensen has also supported McGregor’s desire to reprise the role.
If it means that I got to do more with Ewan, then that’s a no-brainer, but I really hope that he continues with the character. Just as a fan, it’s so exciting to get to watch him play Obi-Wan — he’s just so good at it.
It would be unlikely and contradictory to have Anakin and Obi-Wan meet again, as it would clash with the original trilogy. However, Season 2 could explore Kenobi’s life on Tatooine, possibly focusing on him dealing with threats on the planet or secretly watching over young Luke from the shadows. What are your thoughts?
