A top film executive feels that Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds interacting with pirated clips from Deadpool & Wolverine promoted the vice.
Deadpool & Wolverine was a game changer in many ways. The MCU flick was that movie which brought the franchise back on the track to success. It reformed the franchise’s abysmal track record since Avengers: Endgame. Many credit it with having kickstarted (atleast that is what Kevin Feige and co. hope it is) a path towards the success of its Phase 6.
That isn’t the only thing that the movie is credited for. Of late, moviegoers have resorted to a practice they was hitherto unseen in movie theatres, resorting to piracy by sharing of clips shot from a theatre. And some believe that was also kickstarted by the Ryan Reynolds starrer indirectly.
Fans have resorted to piracy of movies in the aftermath of the pandemic

Things haven’t been the same ever since the COVID-19 pandemic came on the block. And no one should expect it to be that way. After all the world had never seen anything of the scale, an event that had disrupted the life of so many.
When the world resumed, things began to return to (a new) normalcy – one which perplexed many people. Hollywood was not exempted from its shocks. The film industry faced its fair share of upheavals, including one which would shake it to the core – the normalisation of piracy.
This year, Queer found some of its steamy scenes doing the rounds on the internet not long after its theatrical release. Gladiator 2‘s Paul Mescal also began to court a romance with many social media users not long after its release. Even Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s Wicked was not spared by this new crop of cinema goers. And some top film executives have weighed in on how it all started.
Something has happened post-pandemic where movie theater behavior has really changed.
While fans have become emboldened in the post pandemic dynamic, the executive believes that the problem can be traced to some industry bigwigs themselves.
How Deadpool & Wolverine promoted piracy?

It won’t be a misstatement to say that MCU went all out with its marketing when it came to Deadpool & Wolverine. And not without reason. After all, it was anybody’s guess that the 2024 flick was Marvel Studios’ best prospect of returning to the high road after numerous underwhelming returns at the Box Office.
The Prestige star starrer managed to do just that. Made on a $200 million budget, the movie managed to rake in $1.3 billion in earnings over the course of its theatrical run.
While Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds‘s star power was enough in itself to attract the world’s attention, director Shawn Levy and the Green Lantern star were found resorting to a technique that took the world by storm – flirting with clips recorded in movie theatres.
The clips, which the duo shared and interacted with, were mostly fan responses to cameos from Channing Tatum, Wesley Snipes and Jennifer Garner. And the film executive believes that the move played its fair role in giving fans the thumbs up to engage in piracy.

The executive continued,
They have a different relationship with the material, it’s all just content to them. Something really happened with that movie.
While neither Levy nor Reynolds would have anticipated how their action would play out, they seem to have promoted a vice that the industry had managed to keep at bay for all these years.
